trip planning

Hi-- We will be in S.A. in 3 weeks-- so excited, but it is so new to us, we hope we're doing the right thing.

After 4 days in CT (mountain, Robbens I., Cape Point) we expect to drive east to Hermanus for a nice morning, then down to Agulhas, where we will spend the night (in Arniston).

The next day we go to Knysna and have a look around before renting our houseboat in the lagoon.

After that we go to PE and have two days for Addo Elephant Park. Then on to Oudtshoorn-- I know, a 5 or 6 hour drive-- to the Cango Caves & Cango Wildlife Ranch.

Then on to Stellenbosch / Franschhoek to spend the night, and in the morning go to a winery and find a lovely place for a late lunch.

We fly out that night at 10:30 pm.

We realize that we're trying to see a lot in a little time, but a little time is what we have, and we've always wanted to go. I like to think this will be our FIRST trip to S.A. It's a long trip from the U.S. but S.A. is so alluring.

Would any of you experienced SA travelers like to comment on our plans?

Hi janet,

As for the itinerary it sounds very nice. Your plan includes the major highlights of this part of South Africa, except maybe for Tsitsikamma National Park.

The question is, how long are you staying in Knysna, Oudtshoorn and Stellenbosch/Franschhoek... if it only one night each, you end up with 4 - 6 hours drive in between - which is doable but a bit of a pain in the behind. It will still be fun, since the scenery for the most part is amazing and driving in South Africa is relaxed.

If you haven't everything fixed up yet, another idea is to go CT-Winelands-Agulhas-Knyna-Oudtshoorn-Addo and fly back from PE. You will almost see the same and will spend less time on the road and more at the sights. Domestic flights are quit reasonable priced in SA.
