3 days in Hermanus

For our upcoming trip this July, we have been reserved at Birkenhead for 3 days. Is this too long a stay for a 14 day trip to SA? Any experience feedback appreciated, NomadicNina

Hello the Garden state !

Birkenhead House is wonderfully sited with clifftop panorama of the sea, which, by late July may have a few whales in it. Service is impeccable - it is definitely a top posh place to stay.

From Hermanus you can arrange boat tours to watch whales even closer to hand, or if you feel a little more adventurous, drive down to Gaansbai for shark diving.

If you are interested in wine, then there are a number of very good wineries you can visit around Hemel-en-Aarde. Hamilton Russell, Bouchard Finlayson and Newton Johnson are all producing world class wines. One of my favourite wine shops is just outside the town on the corner where you turn off to the wineries themselves. It is called The Wine Village.

For a quieter day drive, try the Overberg. It has a charm all of its own and no restaurant in SA seems to generate such loyalty as Marianna's at Stanford.

The Hermanus region for three days is by no means a mistake. You could quite easily have spent more time in other places as well but I am sure you will enjoy the luxury of Birkenhead and the pleasures of the region.
