I am travelling to Cape Town early Dec for a 1-week stay incl. a conference, scheduled to take place at the CT uni campus but now moved because of ongoing student protests. As far I am able to tell, the protests have been mostly peaceful, but also quite a lot of tension, partly violently (vandalism, fights, rubber bullets, lots of police & private security). This is the first time I am travelling to CT and South Africa, so feel quite anxious... No worries about the days in the conf. (I feel confident that the organizers will take good care of us!) but about evenings and the days I am there as a tourist. My hotel is in the Ronderbosch area, 5-10 min walk from campus.
Anybody (locals? recent travellers who´s been in that area?) who knows something about the situation? Do I have reason for worrying (female in my 30s)? Do you have any safety suggestions? Or other tips about the Ronderbosch/ campus area in general?
