Franschhoek to George/Mossel Bay

Hi, we're planning to fly into Cape Town, spend a couple of days there and then head out along the Garden Route. We're unsure of the distances and driving times between these few places:

1. Franschhoek to George. What is the distance and how long is the drive? Are there any places in between that are nice to stay at or worth checking out?

2. Franschhoek to Mossel Bay. Same, what are the distance and driving times?

What is the best way to take, when going from Franschhoek to George?

Thanks! =)

Franschoek to George is about 420 km, Mossel Bay about 40 kms less. There are two routes, the R62 (well known as Route 62) where there are a number of places to have overnight stops. Alternatively from Franschoek head for the N2, the main highway which is more of a coastal road and probably quicker to drive.

How Long ? as it is a scenic route and there are lots of places to stop it is difficult to say. Speed limits in SA are 60 kph in built up areas, 100 kph on rural roads and 120 kph on freeways. this is a general rule but watch for variations!

Non-stop you could probably drive it in 4-1/2 to 5 hours.

There are a number of threads with lots of info on where to stop

Do a search for Garden Route or Route 62.

Personally I don't think Mossel Bay is worth a stop, fairly industrial not for that matter would I stop in George. Far better to carry on to Knysna or Plettenberg, but thats only my opinion.

as previously mentioned - be aware of the fact that the Garden Route was hit really badly by floods this winter and the N2 highway has been damaged badly. There are delays on this road but they are not that bad. It might be in your best interest to contact the information centre in George and find out from them what the situation with the roads is.
