train route between CT and JOHAN

I would like to travel by train between Johanesburg and Cape Town. Please let me know the best route that is not luxury and what company should I contact for reservations. The info I found on this site was more than six years old and I am hoping things have changed since that time. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks GAIL

Hi Gail, welcome to TripAdvisor.

I would suggest that you use Shosholoza Meyl. I've travelled with them a couple of times and can recommend them. No luxury but comes under my heading of "cheap but cheerful". There are other, more expensive, options for train travel from JNB to CT but, as a way to see the countryside and meet some locals, it can't be beaten.

I would also suggest that you look at the website below and peruse the options. Then contact Santie Bekker via the same website to ask any questions you may have and make the booking with her.

Only one thing to bear in mind is that the arrival time of the trains are often delayed by a few hours so you need to be flexible with any connections you may to make on arrival at your destination.

There are three trains between CT and Jo'burg:

1) The super-luxurious world-famous Blue Train, www.bluetrain.co.za. Costs megabucks, but worth it if you have the money. Runs roughly once a week, around R10,000 ($1,300) per person.

2) The excellent affordable deluxe Premier Classe train, www.premierclasse.co.za. Runs once a week, roughly R2,500 ($300) per person, gets great reviews. Lounge car with bar and piano, restaurant with meals included in the fare, all passengers get a private sleeper.

3) The three-times-a-week Shosholoza Meyl tourist class train from R580 ($75) per person with sleepers and restaurant car. You share a 2-berth or 4-berth compartment unless you book all the berths in a compartment. www.shosholozameyl.co.za Also gets great reviews, same wonderful scenery as the other trains, but the comfortable budget option.

You'll get more response if you try specialist train ticketing agency African Sun Travel to book these, indeed their site has more up to date info than the official sites, www.southafricanrailways.co.za
