Car hire in Cape Town

Can anyone recommend a good car hire company please for our trip from PE down to Cape Town?

I have heard that some companies won't rent to driver's with speeding endorsements on your licence, is this true?

Also there are some horror stores about adequate insurance in the unfortunate event of an accident

Hi, My experience of car rental covers visits for the last 5 years with at least 2 cars rented each visit. All cars supplied have been virtually brand new and I have had no mechanical problems with any vehicle. The big problem I had (still have!!) is when I had a tyre blow, lost control of the car, hit a tree and wrecked the car, I am still being sued for the whole cost of the car. If you want the whole story see my post "car rental" Aug 2nd 2005 (last response Nov 07 2005). The BIG thing to look out for is the insurance, most companies insist on Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Loss Protection and if a claim involves either of these things you should be reasonably ok. If, like me, you have and accident where no other vehicle, animal or person is involved you could have major problems even if you are in no way to blame for the accident. So check very very carefully what insurance cover you are being offered and ask them what the situation is if, for example, you get a puncture, lose control and crash - what cover do you have?? Like a lot of things, most of the companies are fine until you make a claim. Based on my experience steer very well clear of National/Alamo rental. Europcar and Budget have been ok this year for me.

Can't help on the speeding endorsements aspect.

Thanks for the advice, it was actually your post that made me a little nervous about the whole thing in the first place to the extent that I was considering an escorted tour instead!! we have now ruled that out and intend to drive and take the chance!

Thanks again

Hi,

Glad you have decided on car rental as it really is the best way to see everything you want to see. Our experience has been pretty stressful, mainly because National/Alamo simply will not tell me or my attorney the basis of their claim, in fact won't even reply to my attorney's letters so I think they have about admitted they have no claim. Despite all that we went back to SA in October, it was a strain driving past the scene of our accident but that is now behind us. At least they drive on the same side as us in SA. I also find it much easier to hire an automatic gear car, it means one less thing to think about. I find driving, particularly on the garden route, better than in the UK. Just study what insurance cover you are offered, take sensible precautions re safety. We have never felt threatened in SA. You will have a fantastic trip I'm sure

The first time we went to SA we decided for safety reasons to take an escorted tour along the Garden Route (because of low numbers it turned out as just we two plus a driver) but within hours we were of the opinion that driving conditions were excellent on good, quiet, well surfaced, wide roads.

On each subsequent trip (4) we've hired at CT airport and just set off. Certainly much more restful than autobahns or autostrada!
