2 Spare Days in Cape Town-What extra should we do??

Hi All,

We are planning our tours and trips for our visit to Cape Town next week and we have planned to do:

-City Tour-hop on/Hop off Bus

-Wineland tour

-Robben Island/Township Tour

-Cape Pennisula Tour

Now we have two more days in the city and we are wondering what other suggestions or tours people can recommend for us for our last two days??

Thanks

If you have a good day - weatherwise - I suggest just going into the heart of the downtown area and walk the streets to get the feel of everyday urban Cape Town. There are street artists, all of the large and small shops where you can see what's popular here. Green Market Square is a souvenir destination with dozens of vendors selling African crafts. Pick a cafe and have lunch. In other words, just ramble. You can do more of it at the V&A Waterfront where you can stop in the Aquarium, stroll the modern mall, take a boat tour around the harbor. Those are things that work for me.

e.g Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, 2 Oceans Aquarium, zipping coffee at Camps Bay, Trek up Table Mountain, go abseiling, do whale watching tour (if the season is right) have tea at Mount Nelson Hotel, go seriously shopping at Canal Walk or Cavendish Mall, see one of the many art galleries/ museums/ oberservatory.....

I'm sorry if this stating the obvious but going up Table Mountain is generally considered a thing to do in Cape Town.

I agree with Dave about the day spent strolling round the bit of the city centre that the bus speeds past and combining that with the V&A. Another central CT attraction might be the castle (not really a castle in the "medieaval" sense but interesting place to see) - you could easily combine it with a visit to the District Six museum, which would provide a nice introduction or epilogue to Robben Island and township tour.

Time could spent in the southern suburbs - Kirstenbosch if you like plants and gardens, a number of the Constantia winelands are well worth a visit both for wine tasting and historical buildings and exhibits. Tokai forest is a nice place for a walk and picnic away from the buzz of the city.

An alternative (given nice weather) is some time down on the Atlantic seaboard possibly even as far as Hout Bay - the HOHO bus goes that far on the blue route

You've had nearly all the Top Ten, so here's a list I made on another thread some months back of the second best ten things to do in Cape Town. Maybe some ideas from this :

This list shows a broader appeal depending on what your interests are – Historic, Artistic, Sporting and Action!

1. Visit The Castle of Good Hope - Cape Town Castle is the oldest European building in Southern Africa. It has never been attacked since being built in 1666 and is in a wonderful state of preservation. Contains a number of excellent museums on Cape Town, Arts and Crafts and Military Life. As well as a couple of restaurants and a quiet oasis in the centre of the city.

2. Cape Town is an excellent centre for the Performing Arts. Pick up a performance by one or more of the Cape Town Philharmonic (usually at the City Hall), Cape Town Opera (at Artscape or Baxter theatres) or Cape Town City Ballet (again Artscape or Baxter). All Internationally renowned professional companies. Open Air Shakespare performances every summer at Maynardville Theatre in Wynberg. International touring productions of West End/Broadway musicals or local theatre performances in ten theatres around the city.

3. Take a trip to Hout Bay harbour - the Capes biggest fishing harbour. Eat at one of the harbour fish restaurants. Take a 45min boat trip to see hundreds of seals on Seal Island.

4. Go horse-riding on Noordhoek's 6km of pristine white sand beach.

5. Visit the Bo-Kaap. The unique area still lived in by the descendants of Cape Towns 18th and 19th cent Islamic community of freed slaves. See the unique colourful buildings and eat “Cape Malay” food in local restaurants.

6. Take in an International or South African Cricket or Rugby game at one of the two great Stadiums at Newlands – “the most beautiful cricket ground in the world”. Visit the Rugby Museum and learn about the current World Champions.

7. Visit Groot Constantia Wine Estate. Three museums in the 17th cent house and outbuildings show the history of the Estate, the slaves who were shipped here to work it and the history of Wine making. The house is fully furnished with unique Cape Dutch furniture from the 17th and 18th cents. Of course you can also taste the wines!

8. For the brave hearted Paraglide off Lions Head towards the Ocean or Abseil down Table Mountain.

9. See where the world’s sporting focus will be in June/July 2010. Greenpoint houses the magnificent new stadium rising for the Fifa World Cup. You won’t miss seeing it on your trips to the Waterfront. Daily stadium tours are now available with information about the stadium and the tournament.

10. Play Golf at one of Cape Towns magnificent Golf Courses with their spectacular mountain and sea views – Milnerton, Rondebosch, Steenberg or Altantic Beach among many.

So a few different ideas - you need at least another week!

Go for a day trip out to Hermanus (drive the Coastal Route via Kleinmond from CT) and go and do some serious whale watching. Will be so worth it!
