Garden Route Trip

During a trip to the Cape Town in Nov 08, We are looking to do a 4 night 5 day return trip along the Garden route back to Cape Town. Looking for advice on best route to take and places to stay to see the best of rural south africa and also a Game Reserve.

Had suggestions to stay / go to Addo or Shamwari reserve?

If you only have 4 nights along the Garden Route, it could be a bit of a time problem to fit in Addo if you have to drive back to Cape Town again. It's about 770km from Cape Town to PE.

But you could maybe fly back from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town to save some time.

Because in terms of a game reserve, Addo or Shamwari are definitely the way to go. The other game reserves closer to Cape Town (Aquila or Garden Route Game Lodge to name two), aren't really a real wildife experience. They are good enough if you just want to see the animals, but it's more like a zoo experience in my opinion.

Places to stay along the Garden Route: Wilderness, Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma (Stomrsrvier), St Francis Bay, etc.

Knysna is the obvious choice for most people, but is a bit too touristy for some.

4 nights/5 days is really short, is that including the Safari? If so, it is definitively to short. I think 2 - 3 days is ideal for safari, so maybe consider to reorginize.

To safe time you should think of a flight for one leg of your trip. If you have 4 nights for the Garden Route, I suggest Hermanus 1 night to see some whales and also to drive fabulous R 44. After that skip Swellendam and head to Knysna/Plett, and stay there for 2 nights. While there I recommend Monkeyland/Birds of Eden and Robberg Nature Reserve. For the last night head to Tsitsikamma National Park, the highlight of the Garden Route IMHO.

As an alternative, if 4 nights is including Safari, I recommend flying to Port Elizabeth, do a 2 days/nights safari, and spend 2 days in Tsitsikamma and visit Monkeyland/Birds of Eden. Fly back to Cape Town.

As for safari, it really depends on your budget. Addo is nice, but is mainly Elephants and buffalos as far as the big 5 are concerned. No hippos or giraffes.

The country route is along the R62. Cape Town to Plettenberg Bay. Stop over at Barrydale, for one night, Oudsthoorn for one, then pass through Knysna and make your base at beautiful,Plettenberg Bay for 3 nights. From there you are able to do day trips to the beautiful Tsitsikamma Forests along the coastline and surrounds. It is a 4 hour trip to Shamwari (private big five especially lions),or the national park Addo (elephants)You will need only 2 nights in Addo or Shamwari. You are then able to fly out at Port Elizabeth airport to Johannesburg international. Enjoy our wonderful Garden Route, we hope to meet you.

Thanks for your help - looks like flying back from PE is best option and it doesn't cost a lot.

Thanks very much for your suggestions.

It certainly make sense to drive only 1 way. We will definitely visit Plattenerg area and Shamwari seems to have been suggested as best Game Park for variety of Big game.

Hi Steve,

I will agree with the other posts that 5 days is a bit short. Whate you can perhaps to is to visit Sanbona in the Karoo for your wildlife experinec and then go to Knyna (Bradach Manor) from there for the Garden Route. You can hen still fly back from Port Elizabeth and this will fit in your time period.

Alternatively if you have more time you can do the following;

2 x Oudtshoorn (Chandelier)

2 x Knysna (Bradach Manor)

1 x Port Elizabeth (Optional)

2/3 x Eastern Cape Game Reserve (Addo, Shamwari, Blaauwbosch, Kariega etc)

Then fly back again from Port Elizabeth.

Hope this helps,

Johan.
