Pilanesberg to Kruger driving time

What is the driving time from Pilanesberg to Kruger? Can it be done in a day?

Also, does anybody have a hotel or B and B recommendation that might be 1 or 2 hours before you get to Kruger. I plan on taking the main highway out of Johannesberg on my way to Kruger.

Thanks.

It certainly can be done in a day and there would be a few routes from which you could choose. Others more knowledgeable will tell you more.

Hi there

You can easily do it in a day. It is about 465km from Pilansberg to Nelspruit, the largest town/small city near Kruger. From there, it depends where in Kruger you are heading to?

From Pilansberg, drive back to the N4 and take the N4 in an Easternly direction. Just North of Pretoria you will join up with the N1. Take the N1 South towards Johannesburg for about 12-15 km and then take the N4 again, (East towards Witbank).

There are literally hundreds of nice places to stay. Depends on where you want to be the next day?

My plan is to leave Pilanesberg about lunch time, and probably spend the night in Nelspruit. Then we will be ready to enter Kruger as early as possible the following day.

Hello,

Personally, I'd suggest skipping Pilanesberg entirely and heading straight to Kruger -- the game-viewing and general safari experience will be much better at Kruger. IMO Pilanesberg is far too crowded and feels more like a big UK safari park than like being in the bush -- it's an decent option for people who can only manage a day-trip from Joburg, but for someone on a longer itinerary I think the time would be better spent elsewhere. Just my 0.02p.

Cheers,

Julian

Nelspruit has a decent holiday inn express, where we stayed after driving up from pretoria before going into kruger. I also endorse the person who said give pilanesburg a miss; you are going to kruger and will see all the animals ten times over and more.

Best wishes

It will be worth your while to rather go to the Kruger than wasting your time in Pilansberg, seriously Pilansberg is overated and over priced.

Kruger is much better from cost to animal viewing, experience Pilansberg and I will never go there again.

Trust me go to Kruger

I do not think we should scare everybody away from Pilanesberg. This areas does not have the game reserve as its main attraction but rather the Sun City, Lost City, Valley of the Waves, Casinos etc.

In other words - if you are after a resort experience with some game viewing included, then the Pilanesberg area is an option. The Pilanesberg is also a good game viewing option if you do not have the time available to visit the Kruger.

If your objective is however game viewing as such, and you have the time then Kruger is the correct option.

If you have the time AND the money, then the Sabi Sands game reserve bordering the Kruger is the ultimate game viewing experience.

Leaving the PIlansberg at lunchtime, will make it quiet a long day, I would suggest leave at about 9am, travel to Pretoria and then take the road to Witbank and then onto Dullstroom.

In Dullstroom turn off the N4 and travel through Dullstroom to Lydenburg and then from there travel onto Sabie, you can even go through Pilgrims Rest and stop at The Royal Hotel for lunch. If you leave at 9am you should get there by 3pm, taking in wee stops and coffee breaks and the stop at Millys in Dullstoom for mango Jam nad trout pate.

You can then overnight is Sabie and there are so many places, some of the nice and comfortable one are Hog Hollow and Perrys Hollow (thopugh they are closer to Hazyview), gecko Lodge and the artist cafe are really comfortable as well.

From here you can wake up early 30 minutes to Kruger gate and you are in.
