Transfer from Johannesburg to Kruger

Myself and my husband are planning a trip to Kruger in March. We are planning on flying up from Cape Town and staying a night in Johannesburg before transferring out to Kruger, what is the most affordable and safest way to travel to Kruger? We are planning on staying in a private reserve near Hoedspruit.

I am looking at Ashton transfers at the moment and they are looking like a good option.

A number of lodges incorporate Ashton into their pricing. You might ask them about that. It is a reliable service, for sure.

You could consider an SA Airlink flight direct to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) -www.kmiairport.co.za - near Nelspruit and get a road or air transfer to Hoedspruit.

This will by-pass Johannesburg.

Hi gale,

We are going in March 2014 and spent ages searching the options, after speaking with the lodge and other people we decided to fly from joburg to Kruger with Saa. We just didn't fancy 5 hours in a small minibus and 5 hours back again. The only we found was Ashton's..I don't think there was too much in the flight vs road...people do say it's a easy self drive but we are lazy!

Hi there,

I can definitely recommend the Ashton's shuttle - it is a very safe and reliable service, and quite comfortable too. The drive goes through a few cities then progresses to rural villages and mountainous scenery. I use it often for myself and my clients - it stops a few times too so you can grab a snack or a cool drink, us the loo etc.

It is much more budget friendly than flying, but flying is much quicker (50 mins vs 5hrs).

Warm regards

Thanks everyone, really helpful! Adding on the flights is looking a bit more expensive so I think we will go with Ashtons, nice way to see more of South Africa!

The first 2 hours out of Johannesburg are certainly not the prettiest part of South Africa.

Hi GALEdinburgh ,

Just another suggestion. Why don't you look to fly directly from Cape Town to Hoedspruit, rather than flying to JHB and then transferring to Hoedspruit. Flights operate on a Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. It will save you time, unless you really want to be in JHB for a night. Ashtons is reliable as a scheduled road transfer, but keep in mind, that depending on which lodge you are at, you may need another transfer from the drop off point to the lodge and back.

Regards.

9. Re: Transfer from Johannesburg to Kruger

Hi Brett,

Thanks very much, thanks to you we now have an extra night in Stellenbosch (better than a Johannesburg airport hotel I bet!) and are flying direct to Hoedspruit from Cape Town. It didn't work out much more expensive and is a far better use of our time. We will still use Ashtons for our return journey to Johannesburg on the way back.

We have 1 night to stay in Johannesburg before we fly back to the UK, is it worth booking a hotel like Le Residence or are we safer and better off just staying in an airport hotel?

Any tips welcomed! Thanks.
