travelling from Johannesburg to Kruger Gate....what's the be

we are flying into johannesburg, and then traveling to hazyview. we've been told to fly from joburg to nelspruit, and rent a car there. we've also been told to try and get a driver (cheaper and a chance to see the sights). and we've been told to just make the drive, though it is about 5 hours in some tough city traffic to start. any suggestions? if we fly, should i make reservations in advance. we're travelling mid july.

thanks.

You can easily drive yourself, or fly if you wish. There will be very little city traffic to deal with. When you exit the airport in Johannesburg, follow the signs to the N4 toward Witbank, and stay on that highway for a scenic 3 and a half hour trip to Nelspruit. From there it is another hour and a half to Hazyview.

It is certainly not cheaper to get a driver. Going rate for a transfer is R2800 (about $400) per vehicle each way. For that money it is better to fly to Nelspruit. Try www.saairlink.co.za or www.flynationwide.co.za for flights. They will be expensive in July, because of school holidays.

I would suggest to drive yourself - just remember to drive on the left and ask for an automatic if you don't like a stick-shift!

Have fun!

Oh yes, and you will need some cash in South African Rand to pay toll fees. 100 Rand will do.

Hi Miemansk

No problem whatsoever driving yourself. The carrentalag. are right across from the arrival hall and people will help you to get there too! The freeway is very well signposted and you don't need to go through Jo'burg (you even won't see it) We had a small Nissan Almera and that one was fine. No need to hire a 4wd with high clearance unless for driving in the "outback". No need for that too. Kruger has good roads and best see animals along sealed roads.

Not dirtroads, they make more noise!.

I would advice to make reservations in advance. Most SA roads are in good condition. That Almera was automatic and a/c.

Thanks. Most of the advice is to drive, so we most likely will do that, since flights have become so expensive. It looks like I can just go to an online site to book the car....or does anyone have a contact? Glad to know there are some automatic transmissions out there!
