2 days for Kruger Park from Johannesburg

Is it feasible to rent a car in Johannesburg, drive, stay at a lodge/hotel in the park, get a couple of tours and go back in about 2+ days? It'll be first of several visits, so an initial exposure would be OK. Thank you!

It is a long drive from Joburg to Kruger, at least 6/7 hours. And i advice to be in Kruger at least 2 days.

You can go to Pilanus nat. Park. ( near Sun City)is abour 3 hours drive from Joburg, you can drive yourself and they have a lot of game there too.

And hat is easier to do for 2 days .

Have fun

Hi there,

If you were to do this, you would have to leave at around 5am. This will put you at the park (through the Orpen gate) at around 11am. First though, I suggest to purchase some groceries for your self catering unit. You could then self drive through the park, stay for two nights, then drive back to Johannesburg.

Or, you could also look into staying at a private reserve, where all meals & safari activities (2x game drives a day, generally optional bush walks too) are included in your rate. You could either drive here, or take a shuttle such as Ashton's for around R650 per person each way.

Alternatively, I believe that Annemieke is referring to Pilanesberg National Park, which is just as lovely as the Kruger - However, if time allows, I would definitely recommend Kruger.

But, otherwise, Pilanesberg is a wonderful option too! They have a few different accommodation options to choose from, and you could spend longer in the park as you would only have to drive 2-3 hours instead of 6 or so to the Kruger.

All the best,

Jacqui

I agree that the Pilanesberg National Park is a quicker option, although Kruger (N12 then N4 to Malelane) would also work. If you did that, I would suggest staying in a south-eastern restcamp; Berg en Dal or Pretoriuskop perhaps.

An alternative might be to consider some of the private game reserves near Bela Bela (formerly Warmbad). Mabula is a nice private reserve not too far west of Bela Bela. The drive is mainly on the N1 motorway.

If you don't mind a couple of long drives though, you really cannot go wrong with Kruger!!

If you don't mind a ride of about 4.5-6 hrs (depending on the gate) or so I'd go with Kruger---it's just a great park. You can stay in the park at a rest camp and self cater, go to a reserve like Sabi Sand and have everything (game drives, food) included or get a hotel near the park, the Protea Kruger Gate for example, which is a stone's throw from the entrance (if you've got an arm like Willie Mays). If you decide to stay in the park or at a hotel near the park, consider doing the drives yourself---it's very easy to do and part of the adventure.

If you drive through Nelspruit to Malalane, (around 5 hours) but leave early at around 5am, then by lunch you enter at the Malane Gate and can be seeing game. Then stay the night at Bergendal camp in the Kruger Park and use this as a base for the night or two and drive back after lunch. The camps have shops to purchase supplies, but there is a restuarant where you can have meals also. BUT, you need to book quickly, as the camps are pretty full for next year already.

A slightly different consideration - is it possible to make another day or two available? Such a shame to not be able to visit KNP or at least visit it improperly if you are so close.

Wishing you the best in your KNP endeavors, it is a special place.
