blyde river canyon and Parfuri from marloth park

We will be staying in self catering in marloth park in April for about 10 nights. During that time we plan to have a couple of nights at rest camps in the park. I was wondering about the practicality of driving from marloth park and doing the panorama route, staying somewhere near there for one night. We would then go the next day through Parfuri Gate and stay at Punda Maria. Next night at Letaba and then back to Marloth park. does that sound feasible?

The answer is to is probably doable, but a bit pointless.

Outside the park, the N4 and N1 are very fast and good roads. Once you are on the minor roads, the going is usually quite slow. The roads are narrower, hillier and windier and often lined with villages, which mean people, live-stock and dogs on the side of / in the roads.

Take the following into your calculations.

The speed limit inside the park is 40-50km/h. 50km on most tar roads, but not all. At 50km/h, it is very difficult to spot game. Long distances mean you will be travelling through the heat of the day when there is nothing to see anyway. Optimum game viewing time is the first 3 hours after gate opening time and the last 2 before gate closing.

Bear in mind that an elephant can hold you up for 1/2 hour, if he feels contrary.

Pafuri Gate to Pafuri Picnic Site is 1 hours drive. Pafuri Picnic Site to Punda Maria Camp is an hour and a half. These are the driving times at maximum speed. At recommended game viewing speed it would take you twice as long.

Punda Maria's closest gate is Punda Maria gate. I think it is only 15km away.

From Punda Maria to Letaba is 179 km. That is nearly four hours driving at maximum speed. 8 hours at game viewing speed, with stops to watch the leopard/lion etc. More with stops at picnic sites for refreshments and ablutions and stretching legs.

Letaba to Malelane is 226km, 5 hours at maximum speed. etc. etc.

What you might want to consider is a swing round the panorama route to Skukuza or Pretoriuskop and then back.

Stay at Lower Sabie one night.
