Hluhluwe or St Lucia

My husband and I( both approaching 60) intend to stay for 3 nights in April/May in the StLucia/Hluhluwe area, and would like some advice on where would be best to stay. We will have our own car, and have looked at various upmarket B+Bs in St Lucia, and lodges around Hluhluwe, and can't make our mind up! We will want to have a day in the iMfolozi/Hluhluwe park, and include St Lucia lake and the coast. We will be moving on to Swaziland. Any sugggestions as to a good comfortable/luxury base to explore the area? Ideally we would like to be able to have an evening meal en site, or within walking distance so we don't argue about who does the driving

home!

I haven't actually stayed here but Serene Guest house

http://www.serene-estate.com/en/ ,Zulani Guest House http://www.zulani.co.za/, Annes Guest House. check on the reviews on ta. Or you could stay in the Hluhluwe/Mfolozi Game Park either at Mpila Camp or Hilltop (there is a restaurant at Hilltop but Mpila is self catering).

This is where we are staying for part of our trip in Sept - friends who have stayed said the accomodation and hospitality was amazing. Thought location good for exploring all around.

I stayed at Malala Lodge (about a 10 - 15 minute drive to the Hluhluwe Game Reserve entrance) during the World Cup for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience there. They offer a 'safari special' which includes breakfast, dinner, and guided game drives and/or a St. Lucia Estuary cruise. I highly recommend it. We did the game reserve our first day and the boat cruise the 2nd day. That left us with some time to self-drive through the reserve as well. Additionally the meals at Malala were wonderful. Although Hulhulwe and St Lucia are only 70kms apart, they both offer a different experience. The town of Hluhluwe isn't that appealing but there are many bush lodges scattered around the town plus Hilltop Camp in the game reserve itself. If it is the wildlife and bush you want, then Hluhluwe is the place to be.

However, if you want the bush, beach, hiking, bird life, wildlife and a selection of eateries, then St Lucia is the place to be.St Lucia is a small coastal village with a population of +-450 - it is safe to walk around both day and night. On the first day you can take a trip through the Wetland Park to Cape Vidal and still have time for an estuary boat cruise in the afternoon. On the 2nd day,you can take a day trip to The Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve (either self drive or go with a guide (recommend Euro Zulu). There are a number of 4star accommodation establishments all of which you can find on various sites ie www.sa-venues.com

If you decide on St Lucia, look for the hippo - we had a couple of grazing hippo outside the house last night.

Thanks for that. It has confirmed our choice to stay in St Lucia, as we will be "doing" wildlife later in the Kruger.
