Durban & surounding area in August

Hi, my wife is travelling to Durban for a weeks conference in August and I am considering travelling with her and for us to stop on for another week to see the sights in and around Durban. We have holidayed in South Africa before (PE- game reserve-garden route-CT) and loved it. My question is whether August is a good time to visit Durban and does the area offer anything significantly different to the areas we have seen in the Western Cape? Temperatures seem to be 20ish which is ok but also wondering if it's mainly sunny at that time of year?

thanks for any advice....

Durban and surrounds is very different to The Cape Region. It is more African and has the lush sub tropical vegetation.

August is generally the start of our windy season and traditionally September is the start of our spring which brings the rains.

To answer your question, August is temperate weather, not necessarily the very best time to visit Kzn, but still fair weather (we don't have any definite seasons here).

Things to do in the surrounds:

Township Tour - either with Durban Tourism or street scene

Ricksha city bus tour

Ushaka Marine world

lunch/dinner at Ushaka Moyo

Big game country 3.5 hrs from Durban up the North Coast and ST Lucia World Heritage Site

Tala Game reserve (for a small non big 5 game experience) 45 min from Durban

Phezulu crocodile and Zulu Safari

Hindu Temples (Hare Krishna temple of understanding, magnificent temple, largest of its kind in Africa), Muslim Mosques, Cathedrals etc

Try Indian Cuisine and the famous bunny chow (hollowed out bread with curry in the middle)

Our beaches up and down the coastline

Indian Spice Market

Victoria Muti Market (tour with Durban Tourism)

Drakensberg Mountains 2 to 4 hr drive out of Durban (cool at this time of year and sometimes snow on the peaks)

Midlands meander - Nottingham Road - 2 hrs from Durban

Battlefields - re-accounts of zulu, boer and English wars (fascinating)

Zulu arts and crafts
