Durban beaches

We are planning to come to SA for Christmas and New Year and among other things we reserved a hotel on the beach in Durban (Blue Waters) to lie in the sun and swim for a couple of days. But I heard that Durban is a "surfer’s paradise". Is it really always so windy and with big waves so that you cannot swim in Durban as we are not interested in surfing. If that is the case is there a better place for sunbathing between Durban and Cape Town. This is the first time for us to visit South Africa and we would appreciate your advice.

Thank you in advance

If you are wanting to be near the beach so that you can swim and sunbathe, rather stay in Umhlanga Rocks in one of the hotels on the beach front. It is much, much nicer than Durban and also safer. A word of warning though - it is peak summer holidays over that time so you might well battle to get accommodation on the beach.

My recommendation would be Umhlanga which is approx 15km from Durban to the north. There are many hotels and Restaurants/Pubs in walking distance and it is relatively safe. This is a tourist destination.

Herewith some info:

Hope this helps

e-mail kim@amanzimtotibeachrest.com, she is the chairperson for the Amanzimtoti Accommodation Association and secretary for the Saffire Coast Tourism, which starts from the Durban International airport (about 15Km from Durban city center) southwards. She knows the South Coast very well and also has a centrally situated superior rated B&B in Amanzimtoti. Check out www.amanzimtotibeachrest.com.

But be quick for X-mas booking she only takes a limited number of guests.

I have just come back from road trip in SA from Cape Town to Durban (didn't make Durban cause of the snow) 5 days will be comfortable for the drive, check out, Crawford Cabins - outside East London, an amazing place but prob have to book and also if you haven't found somewhere to stay in Cape Town try Fountains Hotel. it is right at the end of N2 has underground parking is a 40rand taxi ride from V&A Waterfront, great rooms and apartments and the staff can not do enough for you.
