Welcome to the forum.

Always get a taxi after dark and arrange it through the hotel. The beach can be dangerous at night, but is perfectly safe during the day. I havent eaten in the area of your hotel, so cant suggest any other restaurants 'on your doorstep'. Although i vaguelly recollect my husband going to restaurant that was on the top floor of a building with wonderful views - maybe someone else knows what it's called.

Not far is Umhlanga area(sorry, cant spell today!) which has really nice restaurants and bars which you are very safe to walk to/from at night. Has a huge shopping center called Gateway too. In the same area is the sharks board which is worth a visit.

Are you going to be hiring a car? If not, your hotel may be able to organise some excursions/tours for you. For instance, you could head up to the valley of 1000 Hills, take in the magnificent view and visit the PheZulu village and get an idea of Zulu life (i personally love this!).

There's also uShaka. http://www.ushakamarineworld.co.za/home.html

I hope i've been of some help, but maybe someone else can help you out a bit more.

Have a wonderful trip.

Definitely take Taxis in the evening. Unfortunately the Durban beach front has become unsafe at night.

For a really good steak - The Butcher Boys in Florida road. Florida road in general has some good restaurants - its about a 7 minute taxi ride from the beach front.

My favourite restaurant in Durban used to be Cafe 1999 - I believe it has changed ownership since then but it still excellent. dining-out.co.za/member_details-MemberID-132…

Stayed there a couple of years ago. Rooms basic Holiday Inn (this used to be one of 3 HIs in Durban)

We found it safe during the day, and at night, although from what other posters say it seems it is no longer so safe at night. We used to get the bus; we never used taxis.

Usual advise; be aware of your surroundings and dont carry valuables or flaunt jewellery.

We had a great meal at Ushaka one night, slightly different to the norm with a nice table by the shark tank. Food was very good as was the service and won't forget eating some lovely seafood as the sharks drift past just a few feet away.

Firstly both hotels are in close proximity - just a few hotels apart actually - so same set of rules apply for both.

Havana Grill & Wine Bar www.havanagrill.co.za at the Suncoast Casino (less than a kilometre from the hotel) is one of my favourites, and Joops Place in Morningside (within 3 km's) is another.

The Edward has (or used to have) a good smorgasbord in the hotel which would be worth checking out.

Regarding mode of transport, best to stick to Taxi's after dark probably. Prevention is better than cure. Don't forget it will be the A1 Grand Prix at that time - so traffic and getting around is not as smooth as it’s a street circuit and the race is close to where the hotel’s are.
