Jberg as a Destination

Is this city more of a place you fly into to go off to places like Kruger park? or is there things to see and do in the city?

There is plenty to see and do in Johannesburg (note the spelling). It has a cosmopolitan 'African' vibe (well, parts of it in any event) and a lot of history. Have a browse through a couple of pages of the forums and take a look at the listings under the Greater Johannesburg "Attractions" tab (embarrassingly, a useful but limited train service is high on the list but you'll just have to look past that to the real attractions).

Having said all that however, while I'm extremely fond of my town it is not regarded by locals as a holiday destination - it's primarily a working city - so a few days would be all you would probably want to spend.

If you want to learn about South Africa and Apartheid, then there are some great museums here worth visiting. Also I personally think it is a great city in which to do walking tours and to see how a city/country is pulling itself up creating its own opportunities.

In terms of "scenery" there isn't a lot, Joburg is a city where you "do" things rather "see" things.

IMO I didn't feel there was a ton to do like in other cosmopolitan cities. I looked through the forums and found I was able to do just about all the major highlights in less than 2 days if you really hit it. No knock against it but I'd head elsewhere after a few nights.

The city is great for history. I particularly recommend a good Soweto tour and the Apartheid museum. Also it is good for shopping and eating, particularly Sandton
