JFK to CPT via JNB, Questions?

Hi, we are departing from JFK on the 12th and flying to Cape Town with a stop at JNB all on South African Airways. My question is will SAA check our bags through to Cape Town or will we have to collect them at JNB and then re-check them?

I think you will have to collect your luggage, and go through customs when you arrive in Johannesburg, because this is your first port of entry into South Africa.

Your flight between Johannesburg and Cape Town will be a domestic flight, with no customs formalities.

As far as I know Gavin is spot on. I believe once you pass Customs at JNB you can either leave your luggage to be transferred to your next flight (much as it is done in the US at first entry to country) or take it with you to the domestic terminal for check-in. Others can correct me if I've got that wrong.

After getting your bags, there is a spot where you can hand them over to SAA to be checked onward to CPT. You then walk out into the Terminal floor and go up to Level 2, where the checkin counters and departure gates will be for your onward flight.
