Driving directions to the Apartheid Museum

I'll be taking a rental car to the Apartheid Museum from the vicinity of the airport. When I go to the Museum's website, they recommend taking the Oberholter Freeway to Main Reef Road, turning left on Crownwood Rd, and then a final left on Northern Park Way. When I look at google maps, it seems more straightforward, and more highway, to stay on the M1 and get off on Exit 7, which seems to be Northern Park Way. Is there a reason not to go this more "obvious" way?

Once there, can I assume that there is safe, guarded parking? I assume there's no reason to be paranoid about leaving something in the trunk?

Also, on a Sunday, can I expect the drive across JoBurg to be reasonably free of traffic jams?

Thanks!

I find the easiest route, for me, is the following:

From OR Tambo, take .the R24 (West), now renamed Albertina Sisulu.

The R24 West Merges with, and becomes, the N12 West.

Follow the N12 West, and bear left, onto the N3 (SOuth).

Keep to the second lane from the left, and take the M2 (West) which curves away to the right. This used to be called the Francois Oberholzer freeway... I was unaware the name was still in use.

Pass the city centre on the right, and keeping to the left, take the M1 (South). also known as the De Villiers Graaf motorway.

You can take Northern Parkway off the freeway, BUT:

I personally prefer not to take the Northern Parkway off the M1S, because once off the freeway, it becomes a little tricky, and it is easy to miss the next turn, across the traffic.

I prefer to stay on the M1S, and take the next exit... Xavier Street (M17).

Turn right at the traffic lights, and cross over the freeway.

Xavier street becomes Crownwood road.

Turn Right into Northern Parkway (M34). A short distance down the road,is the Gold Reef city Casino, on the right, and the Gold Reef City Theme Park and Apartheid Museum on the left.

Sunday should be free of traffic jams.

There may be some road maintenance, or construction going on, though, as this is often done at weekends, but should not be too much of a problem.

You will need to spend at least 2 to 3 hours in the Apartheid Museum, in order to do it justice.

Enjoy the drive.

Too late to edit.

The parking is safe, and leaving things in the boot will be a good idea.

I have actually left stuff in full view.... silly I know.... but had no problems.

Remember, no photo's allowed to be taken inside the museum, and remember to stop at the iSivivani at the exit of the building, just before emerging into the open air... hopefully you'll meet someone who can explain it to you.

Enjoy

Thanks. Looking at google maps, I see that next exit you're talking about.

I know from previous experience that, sometimes, JoBurg highway exits aren't as simple as they look on the map, so that's why I was asking for the best route.

And I forgot about the "trunk" being a "boot." :)

Thanks, Gavin.. I have just copied, and saved, those instructions.. As I read them I 'drove' those roads in my head and realized that I had forgotten one of the important turns... Thanks, indeed!

I did review this museum on tripadvisor. The driving instructions made it easy -- it IS very close to the highway, and there's plenty of free, secure parking. The museum was also empty on a Sunday! Perhaps with Mandela's subsequent death, though, folks will be more interested. Certainly worth a stop if you have a day in Jo'burg.
