One night two day stay in Joburg, where should we stay?

We are staying overnight in Johannesburg, arriving at 1PM and leaving at 5PM the following day.

We'd like to do the Apartheid museum on the first day, and do a Soweto bike tour the following day.

Any advice on where we should stay? Is it best to just stay at the airport overnight? Or should we stay in Sandton like many have suggested in this forum? Ideally, we'd like a place that has a nice restaurants for dinner, and shops/street activity to walk around and experience afterwards...

Stay at one of the hotels of Emperors Palace. They are 5 mins from the airport and have shuttle to and fro to the airport. They have entertainment complex with casino, disco, shops and restaurants.

You can stay at Gold Reef City, which is across the road from the apartheid museum and near Soweto.

Rosebank and Sandton are good suburbs to stay. The Gautrain stops in Sandton and Rosebank and it is walking distance from shopping malls and restaurants.

You could try Melrose Arch. It has a nice vibe about it and great al fresco restaurants. http://www.melrosearch.co.za/

Hello, i recommend Sandton, it is the new city of Johannesburg, whereas the old downtown Johannesburg does not really function anymore as a place to stay. Try Garden Court in West Street, City Lodge Morningside. Balalika Hotel in Sandton, Holiday Inn, these are all reasonably prices and very safe areas. Then you have many different restaurants to choose from within walking distance, particularly on the Nelson Mandela Square, and all in the vicinity are all types of cafes, and different types of foods to choose from. This is the most popular destination for tourists because it is very safe.

Thanks all, it seems like Sandton offers the best dining and nightlife experience, albeit in a way that is more accustomed to western tastes; too bad that there is no viable safe place to stay in Johannesburg proper that would offer a more multi-cultural, South African experience and is closer to Soweto and the apartheid museum.

As for travel to Soweto and the Apartheid museum, it seems that we will have to travel regardless of where we stay, so based on the recommendations it seems we should pick an area that offers the best tourist centric (dining, shopping, etc) experience. However, looking at Google map it seems like there will be quite a bit of going back and forth to Soweto and the museum if we stay in Sandton and do the trips over two days.

That said, I think that a lot of the Soweto bicycle tours offer pick up in Sandton.

You can stay in the Soweto hotel in Soweto. This is a very upmarket hotel but I am sure that you will like it. It is situated on the Walter Sisulu Square where you will find the Freedom Charter Monument, the Kliptown Open museum and also the market.

The other hotels nearby Soweto is the Gold Reef City hotel and the Protea hotel in Gold Reef City. If you stay there you can walk to the Casino at Gold Reef City hotel, visit the theatre. The Apartheid museum is across the street and also visit the underground Gold Mine in Gold Reef City. Gold Reef City is a replica of a mining village. The hop on hop off bus stop is situated there so a lot of options to do.

Good luck

Rosebank has a really nice african crafts market and some of the best restaurants in Johannesburg. You could get the best of both worlds.

I have just returned I stayed in two hotels in JB. The first while nice would be to far out for you as it was in Forways, I had business in that area so it worked for me. The other was at Melrose Arch Protea Hotel very modern. Melrose arch has all the food and shops you could want and as stated the stuff at the Rosebank African Market was the same as the stuff you will see all over. The ProTea Hotel has shuttle every hour to Gautrain. This is all in Sandton.

You would have taxi to your sites but I found them to be reasonable and quick way to get around.

If you go to Rosebank Mall African Market have lunch at the Ocean Basket if you like sea food, they also have one on the wharf in Cape Town great seafood and really cheap prices. JMHO.
