City transport in Johannesburg

In November we are staying in Johannesburg overnight before catching the train to Cape Town. We are wondering if it would be possible to use the Gautrain for the following route: We arrive at the airport at 5pm and need to transfer to our hotel in Sandton (Radisson Blu). The following afternoon we need to be at Johannesburg main station to board our sleeper train to Cape Town. Is it possible and safe to do these transfers using the Gautrain? Thank you for your help.

Short answer ..... yes.

Remember, there are two Radisson Blu Hotels in Sandton.

Make sure you are booked for the Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel .. very convenient, diagonally across the street from the Gautrain Station.

BTW, the province is Gauteng, hence Gau train. Gauteng means "The place of Gold" referring to the massive gold deposit, discovered in 1886, which led to the development of Johannesburg.

A city with a bigger "footprint" than London, or New York, and a population of 8 million.

Enjoy your visit

A No you cannot use the Gautrain to the railway station in Johannesburg. And there you have to take care of your luggage very wel, is not the best place to be.

Ask for a taxi at your Hotel to bring you to the Railway station in the city center.

Have fun on the trip to Cape Town.

The Gautrain Station at Park Station is open and operating, Annemieke. There is a walkway that connects you from the station to the train station.

So you should have no problem with the Gautrain to Sandton before proceeding on the Gautrain from Sandton to Park Station the following day.

I agree, easy to transfer from the Gautrain station (Park) in JHB to the main terminal.

Thank you so much for all your great replies, most helpful. We were booked into the other Radisson so I will change that. The Gautrain sounds perfect and I have now down loaded their App!

We will only have Saturday evening and Sunday morning in Johannesburg

( clearly another visit needed for such a great city!). Does that give us enough time to visit the Apartheid Museum and is that fairly accessible from Sandton?

Thank you for your help.

The Apartheid museum is located about 5 Km South of the main train station.

I think you'd need to take a taxi to get there. Others may know more.

You need about 2 1/2 to 3 hours for the museum, opening hours are 09:00 to 17:00. Remember , the museum is closed on Mondays
