1 Year Stay in Johannesburg

Hello all, I need a bit of advice from some people who know Johannesburg. I may have the opportunity to work and live in Joburg for 1 year, coming from Canada.

Can anyone tell me what I could expect? I have no timely information about Joburg and exactly how safe it is, or the current social and political climate.

I am white, and would be coming with my wife and small child.

Any information of web sites where I could do research would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Entertainment - we get world class theatre and live shows here in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

On at the moment is Mamma Mia! (ABBA) - for the second time - great show. We also have on at the moment We Will Rock You - story about the rock group Queen.

We recently had Chicago - local cast but of world class standard. Last year Phantom of the Opera as well as Robbie Williams in April this year - he played in Pretoria to an audience of 67 000!

Shopping - plenty of shopping malls with some but not a lot of overseas stores such as Guess etc. But generally we are local. Our Woolworths is really Marks and Spencers.

Restaurants - too many to mention. Again all local but ranging from Italian to Mexican to Japanese to South African to Indian to .... the list goes on.

Gemini16,

Thank you so much! Can you clarify "our Woolworths is really M&S?" What do you mean by that?

Can't wait to get there! :)

You may know of the Woolworths in the UK - I would say slightly downmarket stores - it is not the same Woolworths as that, but our 'Woolies' here (as it's affectionately known) is one and the same as Marks and Spencers in the UK and elsewhere in the world.

Our Woolies sells similar clothing and foodstuffs as M & S and although we do get M & S brands in our stores from time to time, our Woolies also has their own brand as well. The quality is that of M & S. For instance, M & S in the UK does a range of dietary foodstuffs called Count on Us - our Woolies also have that range on their shelves.

At one time if a shopper brought something over from an M & S store in the UK and decided they didn't want it when they got back here, then our local Woolies would exchange it - not sure if that still happens though.

In response to "Can you link me to some websites for rental property and recommend a good area for a family with a young child? Can you tell me what suburb you live in, and when the last time a crime was reported in your area? When did crime last touch someone you know or you? Do you hear about kidnappings of children? I have searched local newspapers and see alot of murders, etc, but they seem to be of very wealthy or famous people (?) or drug related. What about the everyday person?"

For rental propery, www.pamgolding.com and www.seeff.com are good places to start with.

A good area for a family is a suburb that is CLOSE TO WORK AND SCHOOL as morning and evening traffic are just awful. If your office is in Sandton, there are many good schools in the area, and be sure to get a home within the N1/M1 boundary otherwise you will spend your life in your car.

When last was crime reported in the area: Every area every day. The police do not release statistics but you can take a look at a fraction of the crimes on www.eblockwatch.co.za

Crime last touched someone close to me several months ago. Kidnappings of children are extremely rare, although I am sure most of them will be hushed up by the families anyway.

There IS violent crime. Over 50% of highjackings take place in home driveways. These days the criminals don't take your car (they just took my jewellry, Rolex, mobile phone and cash at gunpoint last year - join the club - it's happened to nearly every other mother in my child's class) due to sophisticated vehicle tracking systems.

We live in a complex of 14 beautiful large homes in Sandton, with a high wall, electric fence and a 24-hour presence at the gate. In two years we have had one incident in the complex when the electric fence wasn't working. There are many, many complexes like this, and some large residential compounds eg Dainfern, Fourways Gardens, Dainfern Valley.

For the everyday person, life is normal, but a different kind of normal to the 3 years we recently spent in Paris. You do have to drive with your car doors locked, preferably with plastic-coated windows, keep your house locked, have alarm systems in your garden and home etc. Our children go to play schools and outings, we socialise at homes and at restaurants, we go to the theatre and to movies, we hang out at the mall (if we are teenagers), our children go to birthday parties. Life is "NORMAL".

The people of Johannesburg are absolutely wonderful and I LOVE living here (where else do people stop their cars to let other cars onto the road on the way to work every day?)

Johannesburg has the best weather in the WORLD. It's winter now, -1C last night, maximum 15 today and it only rains in summer. Beautiful blue skies all day today and warm to sit in the sun.

Please feel free to ask specific questions.
