Hi

There is so much to do in Johannesburg even if you have just one week.Depending on your interests you could take a Safari even for one night 2 days.Or you could visit a game Reserve about 45 minutes driving from Johannesburg. There is also the Craddle of Humankind which is millions of years old and Cultural Villages and Townships,Apartheids Museum and many others.I have lived here for many years and could advise you.We are a very friendly Nation.Feel free to contact me should ypu want more advise at hesterfischer@yahoo.com or mobile:+27(0)717977784

Hello there

I would definately stop in Johannesburg. I had mixed and worried views of the place until I stayed - its the gateway to a lot of life changing sights and experiences. I stayed / tented at The Lion Park where you get to see and play with many animals and intergrate with the teams there (who are happy to take you out and experience the real Jo/burg)......I think it would be a good idea to get a guide like the person below and definately go to Pilanesburg - it is the most beautiful safari park. They could then take you to Pretoria close by and Soweto. You shouldn't do this alone and a guide is a must. Jo'burg is not expensive if you have lived in UK ! I do hope you do this its a fabulous underestimated place.

Joburg is a nice place and not as horrible as come people make out and there are lots of places to go to from there for day trips, Hartebeesport dam (I hear The Elephant Santuary nearby is great, you can walk with the elephants and feed them), Pilanesberg game reserve (stay over night at Bakubung or Kwa Maritane), The Lion Park. Pretoria for the day.

In Joburg I would head to Melville, Greenside, Rosebank or Parkhurst (village feel, antique shops, restaurants, coffee shops, art galleries along the tree lined streets etc). It's a pity you will be there in winter, Joburg is the most treed city in the world and it bursts into glorious purple when the Jacaranda trees bloom in Oct/Nov). Most people tend to stay in Sandton when they visit but I'm not too keen on it, it's too new and soul less for me. I think the older victorian neighbourhoods in the northern suburbs above have more character.

A guided tour to Soweto is a must and go to the CBD (with someone in the know), the regenerated areas like New Town (Kippies for African jazz, Gramadoelas restaurant for African food), parts of Braamfontein, Main Street (Arts on Main) will show you the urban/city vibe of Johannesburg.

Definitely stop!

You could book into the Kruger National Park for the time, but consider that it is 4 - 5 hour drive from Joburg. The Pilanesburg Game Reserve would be a closer option about 2 hours and they are both fantastic.

Rent a car at the airport and drive yourself.

Book through the SANparks website and go with the accomodation they provide. it's cheaper and the money actually does then go to conservation. But be warned National parks accomodation is great unless you are used to the finer things in life.

The Pilanesburg is also nextdoor to Sun City which (although it is a casino) has an awesome water park, although June could be cold.

I wouldn't bother with a hotel in Joburg, there are much nicer and friendlier B &B's.

There is great historical stuff to do in Joburg and if you decide on the Pilanesburg then split your time between the two. But if you plan to go to Kruger (which is much bigger) just spend a day max two in JHB and the rest of your time in Kruger.
