First of all do not carry a lot of cash on you. Try and limit cash in your wallet to R1000/day to buy lunch, gifts, etc. For R150 ($22) you can eat a great meal with a glass of wine/ beer. Use your credit card for bigger purchases. South Africa has one of the best banking systems in the world you will have no problem drawing money from our ATM's. Any hotel 3-star plus is good value. Typical our Southern Sun Garden Court's, Town Lodges are middle of the road offering great value. If you prefer more upmarket you may consider the Southern Sun 4 star hotels, Radissons, etc. Regarding safety- the same rules apply than in any big city. Do not walk alone in dark, secluded areas, stay with the crowds, be streetwise. Johannesburg stay in Sandton or Montecasino. In Cape Town Waterfront or hotels close to Convention centre. George is very safe. When travelling alone try and use reputable car companies AVIS, Europcar or bus services like Intercape, etc. Stay away from SA Roadlink. Taxis are expensive. Winter June, July , August cold but never extreme with snow like in USA and Europe. You will love it here.
