Driving from Fairbanks to Valdez, spend the night somewhere?

Would you recommend spending the night somewhere on the way to Valdez or driving straight through? We are going to have 3 or 4 days in Valdez the beginning of June 2010.

If you recommend a more sight seeing trip w/a nights stay along the way where would you recommend?

We are still looking for a place in or near Valdez to stay as well.

Thanks

Hi, welcome to TA.

It would help to know what the rest of your itinerary looks like. We might offer different advice upon seeing the whole picture rather than just one piece of the puzzle. Also, what plans do you have for Valdez? Three or 4 days is a lot of time to spend there. What are your interests?

Just taking your question at face value, you can drive Fairbanks to Valdez in about 7 hours plus stops. Lots to see and do along the way (again, depending on your interests). Paxson is a nice half-way point if you can still find lodging near there, and also enables you to explore the first 22 miles of scenic Denali Hwy (beyond that is a gravel road on which most rental vehicles aren’t allowed).

You can check out a write-up on driving from Fairbanks to Valdez at

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g28923-c119230/Alaska…

It also lists some hotels and lodges along the way. I recommend taking your time driving through Isabel Pass (between Delta and Paxson) and staying in the vicinity of Paxson or Tangle Lakes. It is a beautiful drive through Isabel and later through Thompson Pass into Valdez, so please plan on not hurrying!
