best hike to see McKinley near talkeetna

What is best hike under 8 miles to Get good views of McKinley? The closer to talkeetna the better due to time constraints. We aren't going to Denali this time but would consider Denali state park if no options closer to talkeetna.

If the weather is clear you can see the mountain from the deck of the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge. No need to hike.

best view is from the beach in town its a short hike from the end of the main st in town. the hotel has a great view as well but I realy would not call that a hike at all.

Are you looking for a hike or just a great view of Denali? The previous posters have given you a couple good spots to see it from (depending on weather).

Here's a google map link that shows them. The 2 most southern points on the map are the lodge and a nice pullout across from the lodge's entrance. The northern points are just a couple of spots along the river.

Are you going to be in Talkeetna for any other purpose than a possible view of Denali? ...Because you don't need to be in Talkeetna to get a good view of the mountain.

thanks, we are going to Talkeetna for flight seeing tour. How far is Beyers lake from town? It looks like that area is very close to Mt McKinley, would that area provide good views provided the weather cooperates?

Talkeetna turnoff is about Mile 100 on the Parks Highway, Byers lake, quite worth while and with great views, is about Mile 148. If you can afford the driving time, it is well worth considering.

The road looks to be clear of planned construction. You can go to

…alaska.gov/alaska511/mappingcomponent/index

and click on "planned events" to the right, and no construction shows up between Talkeetna and Byer's Lake.

PS. The Flight Seeing Tour is as good as it gets, simply spectacular. The view from Byers Lake is grand for enjoying as long a view as you wish, and having a beautiful place to hike.

At Mt McKinley Princess Lodge (MP 133) you have fantastic views, along with cool glass of Alaskan amber to go with it. A few years ago my wife got a great photo, not a cloud in the sky with everything colorwise balanced, where the green forground blended perfectly with the snowy mountain. It is the best ever I have seen.
