Many thanks ScouserLiverpool for posting this timely reminder. If everyone who reads this forum signs the on-line petition and boycotts these "turtle watching" trips it might make a small difference to the welfare of turtles.... and possibly enough of a difference to put pressure on the authorities to consider banning such trips. I read recently on another forum that over 500 signatures have been collected so far but many more are needed. As for the blue crab, I read that it's illegal to catch the female during certain months (probably to give them chance to breed) as they are endangered - or nearly endangered. However, if they are caught by the boatmen (or anyone else for that matter) can you imagine that they are actually thrown back? Doversole has a valid point. Conservation and care of wildlife is the way forward if we all want to enjoy the delights of Dalyan in the future. :-)
Thanks for posting this Scouser. If you're on Facebook folks go on and Like the Kaptan June page.
Have to admit I have been on crab fishing trips before but will now have to think twice before doing any more, as for the turtle watch trips, I am totally against them.
I have been on several crab fishing tours. The small and female crabs were all thrown back by owner of the boat. Kept some big oines just for the taste.
Don't think I want to eat them next year after reading the article.
I've noticed a couple of posts mention feeding the turtles which I thought a bit odd.
Here's a link to the petition mentioned in the article.
Thanks for that link Scouser.
If tourists stop booking the Turtle feeding trips they will cease. Now that the rescue centre is open, nobody need visit Dalyan and not see a loggerhead up close.
Regarding crab fishing, I've done this on several boat trips and can confirm that the females with eggs attached were returned to the water, but I can only speak for the boat we use. Honestly though the whole crab fishing thing was always a bit pointless, there wasn't much more than a mouthful for meat on anything we caught. It was something to do as much as anything. But if they are becoming endangered, we won't be doing that again.
Well posted scouser. Its time this baiting practice was stopped.
Where is the rescue centre and is it open all day every day,as we would love to visit this in May.
Its on the beach Dudek1, the end you reach by road on the Dolmus. Don't know the opening hours exactly but I think its open most of the day. If you do a search you'll find it mentioned on plenty of previous threads.
