In Hoi An I was in thanh xuan and my brother was in Thien Thanh, both are only a few blocks away from each other.
The staffs and break fast are great in both of these hotels and it only costs $20USD per night, the only thing you need to worry about is that the rooms do unfortunately have ants... as these hotels are built in the open, and it's an on going problem, so if you have anything sweet in your bags make sure they are covered properly!
I was in these hotels only 2 weeks agao, so I assume those ants will still be there... it's ok if you can put up with them for a day or 2....
As the ants were on the wall and were not on our beds....thank goodness!

You will have to look for accommodation at CUA DAI BEACH - Hoi An Town only has dirty rivers.
thanks for the advice guys. Lillyvalley - how long did you stay in Hoi An? We were thinking of staying up to 5 nights, but now I'm concerned that may be too many, although I have read forums from people who spend weeks at a time there. Where else did you visit? We're kind of improvising, but were thinking Nhatrang, Hoi An and Phu Quoc. If 5 nights are too many in Hoi An, maybe we should duck up to Hue for a couple of nights, or fly up to Hanoi to do a night in Halong Bay?
We did two nights in Hoi An and it was plenty. It gave us plenty of time to wander the city, get some shirts made, take an early morning trip visit My Son, eat some great food and buy some artwork. We didn't make it to the beach nearby there, but we had just come from Mui Ne before, so it wasn't a priority for us. With Nha Trang and Phu Quoc on your agenda, you have plenty of beachtime already.
If you weren't planning on Hue, I'd at least plan a night there to see the citadel which is impressive. We also really enjoyed our boat trip up the perfume river to see the imperial tombs in Hue. We weren't on a war history kick, so we didn't do a DMZ tour there, but some people seem to really dig that tour.
cheers for the advice. Sounds like we'll have time to squeeze in Hue then. Not into the war thing either, but pretty keen to see some historical sites. thanks.
hey Alantm (if you're still online), can you recommend somewhere to stay Hoi An and Hue. We're definitely interested in the under $50US/night bracket.
In Hoi An, we stayed at the Thien Thanh hotel, which was fantastic. Highly recommended. My review is under their listings. The pool there was a lifesaver after hot muggy walks through town.
As far as Hue, just avoid the Thai Binh hotels. We stayed in the Thai Binh 2 and it wasn't the greatest of experiences. There are better hotels in Hue.
We stayed in Asia Hotel 45net with breakfast for 2. Very good deal I must say.

Regarding Phu Quoc, if you still haven't got any hotel in mind, check the Saigon - Phuquoc Resort. It's a property of Saigontourist. I stayed 3 years ago so I didn't recommend at first. Things are changing.
I was in Hoi an for 4 nights and 4 days....... I guest it depend what it is you want to do in hoi an.
I needed to get some bridesmaid dresses and a wedding dress made hence luckily the 4 days was just enough.... I do think 5 nights is way too long as Hoi an is a very small town, which you can walk in one day.. and if you want to, you can a taxi to Danang - China beach (40 min away) and cua dai beach (20 min)... only problem is travelling a round this time..means it's difficult to swim in the sea as there are way too many jelly fishes... though this didn't stop the locals... but i'd rather not take my chances so just dipped my feet in the sea where it's shallow.
If you plan to make a suit or a few items of clothing in Hoi an I would suggest stay there for 3 days... as you would need to have 2 trials at least. all this nonsense about Hoi an can make your clothing in 1 day is pointless... cos I have to be honest they don't always get it right the first time round... !! and i've noticed their quality isn't brilliant... so don't be tempted to get all your clothings made!! Plus Yaly is the best taylor... so head there! though my brother and partner got their suits made in Impressions too, which isn't so bad... but YALY is good bet, and I find them more professional!
