Lodging: Downtown or by the Ferry Terminal?

I’ve got one reservation at the Best Western Landing out by the ferry terminal for $162. I’ve heard and read that it’s nicer to stay downtown. The only reservation I could find downtown on my date, as there are several large groups in town, is for $179 at the New York Hotel. This place sounds nice. They both have free shuttle vans. My question is this: Would you pay $17 more to stay in downtown Ketchikan??

I appreciate hearing from folks who might know.

I stayed at the Best Western when I was in Ketchikan. You will be fine there. It's only a few minutes drive from there and they have a shuttle. Keep in mind that unless the cruise ships are in town, most things in town are closed anyway. Take the local bus to the totem pole park if you go. Don't pay for the tour. You can do the same thing on your own without paying the higher cost.
