Kenai fjords

In looking at the possible Kenai Fjords tours, I see 2 - the one run by the park service and the one run by Major Marine. Toursaver has a coupon for the Major Marine one which makes it the cheapest, but the AAA tour guide lists the one by the park service as a gem. Any input regarding which would be the better tour? If the Park service one is best, we would be willing to pay the extra, but... Opinions, please. Thanks!

I don't believe the park service does any tours at any NP including Denali, which is done by a private outfit under contract. Perhaps you are referring to Kenai Fjords Tours, a CIRI group. Alaska Salt Water Lodge also does them, although more costly, but smaller groups

You are probably right. I do mean Kenai Fjord tours. It looked like the park service was doing that but I guess not. Do you recommend either one?

They all basically go to the same places. What is more important is the time spent on the water with more opportunity for viewing. I prefer Major Marine for the reserved seating and the all you can eat prime rib/salmon... I like to eat! :)

I highly recommend Saltwater Lodges smaller boat with a max of 16 passengers.

One of the Kenai Fjord Tours is called the "National Park Tour" could that be the confusion of thinking the tour is run by the park service? The Northern Lights coupon book has a coupon for both the Kenai Fjord and Major Marine I believe.

'The Northern Lights coupon book has a coupon for both the Kenai Fjord and Major Marine I believe.'

That's correct. Major Marine does have a National Park ranger on board their boats, though. Kenai Fjords National Park Tour has $50 off each adult ticket- up to two. So, $100 off if you have two adults going. Major Marine is a 2-for-1 which saves:

Kenai Fjords - $144 - 50 = $94 each (plus tax)

Major Marine - $149 or 159 at 2 for 1 = $74.50 or $79.50 each

So, Major Marine is the better deal, but that's without lunch. Kenai Fjords provides lunch with their tour price. MM charges $19 extra if you decide to have their buffet- making their totals $93.50 and $98.50, respectively. It ends up being a pretty close margin as you can see. I've been on both and liked them both, so either way, I don't think you will lose.
