Photographing Mendenhall Glacier Area

What time would I need to get to Mendenhall to try to photograph the area without getting other visitors in the photographs in August? Any suggestions for viewpoints? Thanks.

Will you have a rental car ?.......If so, a really great photo spot is from the highway that goes out to the ferry......just past the Safeway you cross the bridge over the Mendenhall river and right on the other side is a parking area for the river trail......picture from there would be the glacier in background, a band of evergreen trees and then a wide field of fireweed bushes in the foreground.....they should be in full bloom in August.........

If you will be out at Mendenhall Glacier it is not impossible to take a picture with people in it, just stand at the edge of the lake.......if the weather is cloudy, that usually brings out the blue coloration in the ice, more so than a sunny day........It's almost impossible to take a bad picture of Mendenhall......

Another great place to photo the glacier is from Douglas Island......cross the bridge from downtown Juneau over to the Island, turn right at the round about and follow the road to the northern tip......at the boat launch there you can see the glacier in the distance and get sea views, and eagles flying in the foreground.........

Return to the round about and continue south on the main road into the community of Douglas, lots of photo ops there......native cemetery with spirit houses, views across the water of Juneau and cruise ships, Treadwell mining ruins down on the beach trail at the end of the road.......

You're not likely to get anybody in pictures you take from the Skater's Cabin off Montana Creek Road, on the other side of the lake from the Visitor Center.

As long as you're renting a car, I recommend driving further out the highway to the Shrine of St. Therese, and then continuing on at least as far as Eagle Beach. Lots of great scenic views out that way.

Another poster mentioned North Douglas, which has a great distant view of the glacier, and if you go out that way, you should consider driving up Eaglecrest Road to the alpine terminus of our ski area.
