Mendenhall lake kayak rentals?

We will be in Juneau for the day aug 19 and we are renting a car to drive and hike the glacier loop. How and where can we rent kayaks for another view of the glacier?

Go to www.juneaukayaks.com.

I think they are part of a company called "Above and Beyond".

Good luck.

It is Above & Beyond, I did this one in early June - www.juneaukayak.com/mendenhalllake.html

It's pretty much renting kayaks (you are not escorted), they supply you with the gear, including waterproof clothes/boots, some instructions and transportation. The only bad part is they drop you off and then come back in 3 hours. If you decide to be done early, there is no shelter at the dropoff location. If they are able they will come early if you call but you may need to wait a while. We waited in the rain but it wasn't too bad since we already had all the waterproof clothing on. If you dump the kayak (very rare) there may be no one there to help.

The OP said that they will have a car and drive, so if they are done earlier than the 3 hours they can just drive themselves back. The kayaks are stored at the landing on the west side of the lake so I doubt they would have to wait for someone to come just for the kayaks (though double check with the outfitter).

Thanks everyone for the great tips. Sound like wet or dry suits are needed by people going out on lake mendenhall. After this death, I think we will skip this activity and just use the rest of our time at the glacier or in town.

Some are saying this accident appears to be a heart attack.......my heart goes out to his family, but if it was a heart attack it could have happened anywhere.......

LIfe is too short to try to limit yourself to what may be deemed absolutely safe activities and places........

It does make sense that it was a heart attack because I have kayaked before on the ocean and they are very stable. He probably tipped over after he went unconscious and the family couldn't get him out of the cold water.

Well, people have died at glaciers, have died flying, have died just being on a cruise ship. So just because someone died kayaking (for which I am terribly sorry) doesn't mean someone shouldn't do that activity.
