Need to rent a car in Juneau?

We are visiting Juneau for 2-1/2 days in June. Do we need to rent a car, or can we get by with available public transportation, shuttles and cabs to see key sites? Thanks!

If you are staying downtown, you can see quite a bit on foot (museum, governors mansion, mt roberts tram, shopping with the cruise ship passengers)......but do rent a car for at least one day to really see the area....It will give you the freedom and flexibility to explore on your own......

I agree with mombear. It does depend on what you want to do but for example, the easiest way to get to the Chapel by the Lake and the shrine is by car (past Auke Bay and public buses don't go there). You can take a shuttle bus from downtown near the base of the Mt. Roberts Tram to Mendenhall Glacier so that can be covered easily without a car.

If you want to get to the west side of Mendenhall Lake (west glacier hiking trail for example) it would be best with a car since the public bus drops you off about 1 mile from the trailhead.

When in Juneau definitely try to take a whale watching tour. They last 3-4 hours and are well worth it.

Thanks for the input! We'll rent for the one day as suggested. We booked a whale tour with Dolphin Tours...I hope they are good!
