Homer & seward

My wife and I will be on our first trip to Alaska this June. We will be spending time in/near Denali and then head south to the Seward and Homer area.

Our itinerary so far....

Day 1 -drive from Talkeetna to Seward- night in Seward

Day 2-Fjiord tour-all day Major Marine- night in Seward

Day 3-short hike on Exit Glacier, then drive to Homer- night in Homer

Day 4- bear viewing with Emerald Air- night in Homer

Day 5- fishing trip?--night in Homer

Day 6- drive to Anchorage for 8pm flight

Would like to do some type of fishing trip, other than out on a halibut boat. Perhaps river fishing for beginners?

Any comments on the fishing trip and/or our itinerary would be appreciated.

Not knowing your exact dates on the Kenai, we timed the first red salmon run on the Kenai/Russian for the solstice. You could get a fishing guide in Cooper Landing, perhaps with an additional king salmon stamp on the license to go for kings.

I'm curious how you are starting your trip in Talkeetna?

I think that's after they've been to Denali AKS.... You could go salmon fishing, fly fishing, kayak fishing or get a water taxi to take to across the bay somewhere for remote bank fishing. As mentioned by DC - depends on the time of year you are visiting. Check out the Homer Chamber fishing section: www.homeralaska.org/visit-homer/fishing for some resources to follow up on.

We arrive in Seward on June 14th and depart on the 19th. We are leaving from Talkeetna after spending a few days at Deanli and one night at Talkeetna.

Does anyone have any experience with a guide company for the day trip of fishing? We're both brand new to fishing (not since we were kids) but we sure would like to try it in Alaska

Ask Homer Chamber of Commerce (www.homeralaska.org) for a visitors guide to see what is availble.

We had a great charter with Alaska4star out of whittier. caught halibut.cod bass and salmon. No Seasickness. You can get a visitor guide for the Kenai that will have dozens of guides and charters. You want to talk with several. Maybe a float trip for trout. Keep in mind that much of the salmon harvesting that occurs in the rivers involves snagging the fish with a bare hook in the mouth. Not quite traditional fishing, so make sure you have a good understanding with the guide as to what you want and what the best options will be.

Homer is a great place for fishing - try Homer Ocean Charters. We have gone out with them many times.
