Homer and/or Seward fishing

Hi, We are a family of four, mom, dad, 20 and 16 year old sons. We wish to fish while in Homer and/or Seward. Our budget is conservative. Any recommendations for ocean charters? Also, can we fish any rivers or lakes on our own? Are there places that rent fishing gear? Is it best to river fish with a guide? We really need guidance please, this is our first trip to AK. We are traveling late July into early August. We are also big hikers and love wildlife! ANY advice would be appreciated.

Thank you so much...

I've gone out of Homer several times with Big Bear Halibut Charters. They are not the cheapest, but they have the bigger boats so they are able to get out to Ushagat Island where the bigger halibut are. We've always caught our limit and our fish are usually bigger than the others back at the dock

As big hikers, you might want to research the Harding ice field trail next to Exit glacier at Seward. It's a world-class hike.
