fishing guides

Is it true, that in Alaska, one MUST hire a guide before any fishing can be done? My husband is there now, and has been told this is a requirement in addition to the fishing license.

I can't believe this is accurate!

Thanks,

Kentucky Kitten

Guide, no. License, yes. Perhaps it was suggested that he use a guide to cut down on figuring everything out, such as where, what equipment, tackle, etc. Of course, we Alaskans know where to go fishing, but visitors don't. So, often we will suggest a guide just to enhance their experience, and eliminate the frustration of planning. At least, I hope that is the case.
