Best resort to stay with young kids

Hi

My husband and I and our three kids (8,6,2) are planning our first trip to Rarotonga in the last 2 weeks of October this year. We would like to stay in one of the resorts with a kids club so that we can occasionally have a couple of hours to ourselves. It looks like our choices are The Edgewater, The Rarotongan or The Pacific Resort. We would love some advice on which one to choose in terms of price, location, facilities, swimming, proximity to other things. Should we stay at one for one week and another for the second week to experience different sides of the island? As a busy Mum I was looking forward to not having to worry about preparing meals but would love to hear about any awesome self-catering accommodation as well as we could also try that for one week and do the resort thing in the second week to keep the price down.

We can't wait to get there! Any other advice for first time visitors with young kids would be welcomed!

Thanks,

Jo

Hi zacsshack,

Your have correctly identified the resorts with the kids clubs. The next decision you have to make is what attributes each resort has that appeals to you - obviously, if you're only going to utilise the kids club for a couple of hours each day (and it's great) but the other 22 hours you're really unhappy with the facilities, then it's obvious that you must do some "homework" - look at the reviews for all three properties. Consider locality, do you want the west coast (Edgewater) with great sunsets & not so great swimming, The Rarotongan, with great snorkelling, great kids club but really bad reviews regarding staff attitude & possibly in need of refurbishment. Then, the Pacific Resort in Muri Beach, which is, by Rarotongan standards, "tourist central" & in my opinion overpriced for what you get.

For recommendations regarding private rentals, once again, you need to decide which area you wish to stay in. www.holidayhomes.co.nz & www.rentraro.com as a starting point, will give you a good idea of what's available. Once you have a short list & specific properties & queries please get back to us.

Kia Orana Jo, welcome to the forum.

Another approach is to try a fully serviced resort, with kids club, for the first week and then move to a s/c property the second week.

There are several very nice s/c villas located close to Aroa marine reserve where the Rarotongan Resort is situated.

1. Have a look at Lagoon Breeze Villas with its beautifully presented grounds and villa layout, including children's playground and paddling pool - www.lagoonbreezevillas.com/accommodation.htm.

2. Vaikoi villas which is situated to the east of the Rarotongan with access to a wonderful beach area. Very private and quiet locality, yet a minute to the Rarotongan Resort for snacks and meals - http://www.vaikoi.com/.

The Pacific Resort is a lovely property. But it's kids club is aimed at slightly older children. Location wise there is always something happening in Muri village, which may appeal to you. Edgewater is an all round family choice due to the range of accommodation available there, including 2 br apartments and stand-alone s/c villas.

Another resort to consider is Muri Beach Resort, at the southern end of Muri. Although it doesn't have a dedicated kids club, the staff arrange informal activities. Location is good for swimming and kayaking, with easy proximity to food-bars and cafes, and a range of Muri village activities. Reasonably priced family-accommodation - http://www.muribeachresort.com/

October is a very nice time of year for a visit. You will probably want to consider hiring a car for some/all of your stay to explore, and purchase food supplies.

Hi there - we stayed at the rarotongan our 1st trip when kids where smaller - kids club was awesome and they can go to any/all of the 3 dedicated sessions per day, ie: the evening one was a few hours so we could go out for a meal.

the beach out front is to die for with loads of fish at only knee deep, the pool was lovely and clean, used plenty on a daily basis as well.

hated our room (which was a cheap air nz deal package) a cramped garden room for all 4 ---DONT get that one!.

Hope that helps a little.

If you choose to self cater, we stayed at Lagoon Breeze Villas which is just down the beach and across the road from the Rarotongan. It was a great place to stay. The staff were awesome, the included breakfast was great and the rooms and pool were very good. I would suggest a two bedroom for your family if you book there.

If you do self cater as long as your food is vacuum packed you can take it to Raro as some food can be expensive. We stayed at the Rarotongan without children and loved it, but would probably hire a house next time. Try and get to the market on Saturday, church on Sunday and take your own snorkelling gear and go to The Fruits of Rarotonga and snorkel. Its brilliant. Cant wait to get back there some day. Enjoy.
