New Year's Day

Hi all. I've been perusing the forum for the past couple of weeks, and I know that most stores/restaurants are closed on New Year's Day, which is when I arrive in Raro. Could someone please let me know what is open, especially near Avarua, since I will need to be able to walk from Paradise Inn, as there will be no bus. Thankyou.

Kia Orana gidg, welcome to the Cook Islands forum.

While it is true that most business, supermarkets, trading banks, some restaurants and the small cafes & coffee shops in Avarua and around the island will be closed to take advantage of the public holiday and a well-earned rest, there will be some places open as usual. In many respects the day will be treated as a super- Sunday with church services taking place, and limited availability of supplies. However, the resort restaurants will be open and the bigger resorts will serve meals and beverages as usual. Edgewater will more than likely host their special buffet luncheon.

I suggest that you email Paradise Inn to enquire if the small Ngatipa Store right beside them will be opening from 6am til 9am, as usual on Sundays. Also the small grocery shop across the road that sells petrol is hugely popular with locals. It may well be open. As far as restaurants in town go, possibly Raviz will open at night. Not sure about Trader Jacks though or their Bamboo Jacks restaurant nearer to Paradise Inn. The chicken and chips takeaway located on Avarua wharf may well be open as its a 24 hour operation anyway.

I'll ask around the locality to see what will be available for you and post a further reply to this thread. I also suggest that you bring a few snack-type food items with you to Rarotonga. So long as you dont bring in any fresh fruit, veg etc, this common practice is quite OK with C Is border staff. At least it will get your holiday started! And the shop next to Paradise closes at 9pm weekdays, while I think the store opposite closes at 10pm. Taxis will be available, since the bus timetable says they aren't. I will check these details also and confirm.

Happy holiday planning and I'll report back. Please bump this thread up by the end of August if you are still waiting for an answer. Kia manuia.

Thank you very much Frangipiani. I love how you give such detailed answers to everyone, you're very helpful.

I'm planning on bringing some snacks, and breakfast is sorted for NYD (I actually arrive at 12.55pm on NYE) I'm mainly after lunch and dinner options around Avarua, as I plan to explore the local area on my first day, then the rest of the island after NYD. I will also ask Teina at PI for information. Thanks again Frangipani, you help is greatly appreciated, and I cannot wait until my holiday!

You're most welcome, Gidg.

Regarding lunch and dinner options, I'm sure that Teina will be a font of local knowledge for you. I will also ask around the town also and post the results of what's open/closed in Avarua to this thread.

Are you keen on hiring a mountain-bike or cycle? This form of transport may help to get you further afield in case Super-Browns 24/7 convenience and takeaways is open as usual. SB is located in Tupapa past the Fishing Club/Flying Boat cafe, & past Club Raro too. Otherwise in the airport area, Aquarius hotel definitely opened last year for a buffet luncheon spread.

You are going to be staying in an awesome spot for a NYE celebration. The big lounge and outdoor deck area at Paradise Inn is magical. Perfect for socialising with other guests. And so handy to town for a little nite-life, the movies and retail therapy. Nice one!

Oh Frangipani, I would love to hire a bike, but I have 2 bad shoulders and can't ride any longer :( I am planning on hiring a car for a couple of days in to the trip. It sounds like I'll be right for some quick meals on my first day.

I am so looking forward to staying at Paradise Inn. I did lots of research before booking my trip and it seems perfect for what I'm after.

Thankyou again :)

We arrive for our honeymoon on New Years day and I was wondering the same thing, whether everything would be closed or not...so glad to see your responses Frangipani! We are staying at Sea Change villas. I realised we wont be able to get our licenses probably until the 3rd Jan so we will have to make do with bicycles too...which will be fun!

We also cant wait for our Raro getaway!

Kia Orana

This is a good question, we arrive New Years eve and would need to stock up on some food too, staying at Maiana in Titikaveka.

Thanks for the info

Wendy
