Car hire companies help

Which company should I start at for reputable car hire. Cost is not an issue. Reliability and safety is as we are travelling with a baby. And do they have by car seats? We are flying there on Tuesday, so any help would be appreciated.

When last we traveled with family we hired a vehicle from Island Car & Bike Hire. We picked up our vehicle from the airport with a baby car seat in it - we had to fit this ourselves & we were told this prior to agreeing to the rental. This was in September 2010 & I think it cost us $2.00 per day for the car seat.

First tier companies with new or near new vehicles include Avis and Budget. If you want airport pickup with a infant/child safety seat provided, you wuld need to book ahead.

Avis is located downtown Avarua in the CITC shopping complex, and also at Pacific Resort Muri. Budget downtown office is across the road from the Catholic Cathedral. They have branches at Edgewater, near the Rarotongan Resort and in Muri.

Second tier operators include Rarotonga Rentals, Raro Cars, Pacific Cars and Island Car & Bike Hire.

We hired a car from Island Car & Bike Hire and were pleased with the car and the rate.

The only infant car seat they could provide was old, not up to Australian standards and a bit mouldy. Apparently no one uses them over there. After giving it a bit of a clean though it was fine as we really only needed it to keep the baby in the seat, rather than being concerned about protecting him in an accident.

You will find once you are there that the road is very safe, barely any traffic and the speed limit is 50 km/h, so the slightly dodgy baby seat wasn't a big concern for us. If it would bother you though you might be better off bringing yours from home

We were there last week. Polynesian Car Rentals had a sign advertising a company that rented baby equipment including car seats. Cant remember the name though sorry, but they are available!

We were in Raro a month ago, and hired a car from Island Car Hire - it all went seamlessly and was completely hassle free. The car was reliable and cheap. Can't throw in anything re child seats as we didn't need one but am sure they are available - send them an email - they were always very prompt to respond to my queries. Have a great trip!
