Kia Orana Janine, Any of the accommodations on the west side of the island on the beach would be good for whale watching. That's an area that stretches from the main wharf in Arutanga to the airport - 5K. The closer you get to the airport end (north) the closer in the reef is to the island and thus easier to see the whales. They are usually just outside the reef so they are usually quite easy to spot.

Happy spotting.
