Hi Jane,

Expect to pay above $30.00 for a steak meal on the island at the better eateries. About the same price for a quality fish meal. And around $9.00/$10.00 for a glass of house wine. But there are several places where you can dine for $18.00 for a main course including Samade and Puffy's. Both of these are licenced also. A number of small cafes offer burgers and fries starting at $6.00 for a basic burger, and $5.00 for fries. Is a tropical breakfast included in your tarrif? Several accommodation units provide cooking facilities which helps to keep costs down. There is a fresh produce market located in town at the Orongo Centre near the wharf. Numerous small shops, but none around the Ootu Pensinsula area. If possible, it would pay to grab a few groceries ahead of arriving on the island. Rarotonga has a good range of food items, with lower prices than Aitutaki.

Hi Sleepyjane,

My impression is that meals are pricied similar to what we would pay in Canada. The exchange rate works nicely in our favor, today the rate is $1 cdn = $1.30 nzd.

Eating in the Cook Islands is far less than lets say French Polynesia, though it's hard to beat French cooking : )

I much prefer Pacific rim cuisine. It's lighter with fresher appeal and flavours in a tropical nation. I wholeheartedly agree about Cook Islands prices offering far better value for money, by comparison with FP though tikiintahiti. Kia Manuia.

Hi Jane. We got back this week from a 7 day trip to Aitutaki last week. We stayed at a place that had a kitchen and BBQ so we ate out 4 times and stayed in for 3 meals.

We had a BBQ buffet dinner at Tamanu on Sunday that was NZ$45 each (note thought - there was dessert and you could eat as much as you wanted and lots of nice local food).

Tuesday night we had dinner at Tapunas and for an entree and main, plus a beer each it cost NZ$120 total bill.

We had dinner at the Boat Shed Wednesday and this was about NZ$100 for same, entree and main and a beer each.

Thursday we went the fire show at Tamanu and this cost same as the BBQ night NZ$45 each, plus we also had a NZ$30 bottle of wine.

We cooked sausages on the BBQ twice. We bought sausages, onions, bread, potatoes and tomatoe sauce at the heineken store (it has a heineken sign out the front, not sure what the real name was!) and this cost about NZ$30 for two meals :)

We also had a nice lunch at the Koru Cafe - this was about NZ$50.

Hope this helps. Frangipani is spot on - if you can take food over from Raro then its worth it. You might find the range in Aitutaki limited and we found a lot of out of date stuff (But we also found lots of out of date stuff in Raro too so its not just Aitutaki!). Beer still tastes good past the best before date! We were told it costs $10,000 to send a chilled container to Aitutaki so its reasonable that they try to recover this cost!!

Also another tip from us to save money - check your bill :) Three times out of the four we nearly paid for drinks for other tables or food that wasn't ours. It was not intentional - I think they were all just busy!!
