Value Added Tax - VAT

I understand that there is a VAT tax throughout FP and would like some more information.

1. Does it apply to every item you buy or just specific products?

2. How much is the tax?

3. How do people claim a refund if not leaving from an airport?

4. Is there a dollar amount you have to spend at any one store or is it cummulative?

Thanks for your help. We are going there in October and wish to acquire some pearls and this might help us decide what best to do- eg. mounted or unmounted.

Hi there!

I think i can answer most of your questions:)

1. It applies to everything

2. 14%

3. For pearls, ask the vendor for the declaration papers for the airport and they will discount it for you at the store.

4. Not sure i can help with that one..

Have a nice trip!

Best of luck getting it back - we are still waiting - 15 months after we returned and after several attempts to reach the pearl vendor. No luck.

Meadowlark,

You have to ask the discount to be done at purchase time...

We went to arc en ciel bora bora, they credited the tax at the purchase time and then we gave a paper at the airport so they dont have to pay for it ...

Sorry to hear they didnt do it that way for you!

We had a 300$ rebate at purchase ...

Based on my experiences in other countries, the best bet is to ask for it right away at the time of purchase. You probably need to show papers that you are not from there, and not sure if everyone offers that, but that is definitely the best way to do it in my experiences.

The place that sold us the pearls told us that the refund would be sent to us once we returned home ---- guess we were given wrong information. :(

Thank you for the information. I guess we will just pay it and move on as it appears there is no refund on loose pearls.
