one free day in San Jose

We are staying at the Don Carlos Hotel. Have one trip to La Paz waterfall garden plus one other free day. Looking for recommendations for inexpensive restaurants near our hotel and any "must sees" nearby. Thanks.

The Doka Coffee Estate tour is nice - very pretty there, and you can see how they make coffee. You can visit Poas volcano when you go to the waterfall gardens if you want to. We haven't done it, but in addition to the museums, some people recommend seeing the national theater.

Your hotel is in barrio Amón which is very close/convenient to restaurants, shopping & cultural activities in central San Jose.

Mercado Central is a fun place to explore - a kind of rabbit-warren of shops and stalls. As suggested above there are many museums in the area to visit. I've taken a tour of the national theatre - many interesting stories such as how they ended up with the statues that adorn the outside of the theatre. If you want to catch a movie you could visit the mall San Pedro near the University. Usually recently released American movies either sub-titled or dubbed in Spanish (especially if animated or geared towards a younger audience). Many Catholic churches in the area if you want to attend a mass or just see some religious artwork.

Not sure about restaurants. Perhaps your hotel can offer suggestions.

The gold museum and the National Museum are some good choices also the Mercado central. However if you want to venture out I would reccomend to take the day trip to the Irazu Volcano, Cartago Basilica and the beautiful Orosi Valley , it is really a nice area to visit with beautiful vistas, coffee fields old churches

You've had good advice on things to see in San Jose - all good advice. If you want a restaurant close to Don Carlos Cafe Mundo isn't bad, walking distance and good patio, Tin Jo is also walk able and has fun decor and then there is Arte y Gusto within walking distance nearby. Cabs are also a good price if you'd rather not walk. Trip advisor restaurant suggestions are helpful but keep in mind that they do have a self fulfilling momentum to them. Glad you're giving San Jose a chance though - too many people just rush through it.

After touring the museums and, the market and Avenida Central - just relax with a drink on the patio in front of the Gran Hotel across from the National Theatre and watch the people walk by. Many people say they want to experience the Costa Rican Culture and then purposely avoid the place where over two thirds of the population live!

Hi,

we´re travevlling later this year to San Jose and we´ll spend a day out of the city. we don´t know if it´s more interesting the Poas volcano- doka state-waterfall garden tour or irazu volcano and orosi valley. What would you recommend?

is it better to take an excursion or organized tour or just rent a car and drive ourselves?

Thanks,

pablo
