what hotel has the best beach?

We love the beach and this will be our first trip to this area. We like to stay at nice hotels with a great beach. Thanks.

I assume you'll be on the Pacific side. We have stayed at the Paradisus Playa Conchal twice. Conchal beach is beautiful. One side is very shelly and the other soft. It's in a large horseshoe bay so the waves are small. We stayed at Langosta beach once and although it's pretty, the waves are enormous. It was actually quite dangerous. All beaches in Costa Rica are public so none of the resorts are actually on the water. The Paradisus is a mile away from the nearest town so the beach is never crowded. The hotel property is only 50 yards or so from the beach entry (I think that's as close as you can get). We love that resort and look forward to going again in the future.

In Jaco, we stayed at the Hotel Club del Mar. Its about a mile from Jaco. $1 cab ride into town. The restaurant there is outstanding...try the ceviche even if you don't stay there. Their beach is excellent. Black sand with a few stones. The waves there are excellent for surfing and boogie boarding. The rooms are actually 2 bedroom condos...nicely appointed.

Hey another Texan,

My top 3 are:

Si Como No and Manuel Antonio beaches

Hotel Capitain Suzo at Tamarindo (and Playa Grande - next beach (turtles))

Punta Islita Ocean Resort at Punta Islita (Nicoya)

Have a fun vacation.

Don't worry about your hotel being "right on the beach". In most cases, the beach is pretty close and in others not buildings are allowed on the beach.

In terms of beach locations, my absolute favorites are Manuel Antonio and Playa Grande with runners up being Tamarindo, Playas Las Cocos and Playa Flamingo.

All have a variety of good lodgings in various price ranges, but again, my favorites are:

MA --- Hotel California set fairly high above the ocean with spectacular views of the jungle streting all the way to the sea.

Playa Grande -- Hotel Bula Bula perhaps the most tranquil, small luxury property I've enjoyed anywhere in the world. Spectacular food as well.

I will never ever use a costa rican based travel "agency" like www.vacationcity.com, they used my credit card and stole my money, they are a fake agency, avoid!

Thank god the credit card company refund the money. They are under investigation.

Thanks lourda for your post. I actually just received a proposed itinerary from vacationcity for my trip in november. I'm glad I came here and saw your post. Now I'm trying to look for feedback on costarica nature escape tour operator. They look legit as they posted their Tourism license. Any info is much appreciated.

ESPECIALLY in cases like going to Central America... dont' try to save money booking online.... ask for references for a legitimate, trustworthy and knowledgeable travel agent, who has BEEN there! You won't save money booking yourself, and in many cases, (as with most destinations)you will save more money .....

some travel agencies have great connections for upgrades, etc as well as the best price points available to them. Many are also destination certified, meaning the agent has visited the destination, taken extensive classes and KNOWS where to send you depending on your preferences. In particular, every

agency i've ever worked for has specialists in various destinations, and uses excellent and reputable companies to book clients...

taking a chance is never worth it, and twice so in the case of Central America travel.

p.s the Conchal is wonderful`

I have been to Costa Rica many times and prefer smaller hotels. My favorites: Florblanca in Santa Teresa (on the beach) and Makanda in Manuel Antonio. Punta Islita is nice, but needs a little updating. If you stay there, request dinner on the beach. Great experience. Villa Calitas, north of Jaco is nice (way up on a mountain). Others mentioned above tend to be more resort type properties. I guess it is a preference thing.

Also, centralamerica.com is great to work with. I have booked many things through them.
