Good hotel with A/C?

My wife is pregnant and would prefer a hotel in the San Jose area that has A/C. I think we're fine without A/C but don't know if the humidity will be high in May and feel it's best to accommodate her request. I'm new to this as you might have guessed. ;)

We're thinking of staying at the Marriott at the end of our trip. Are there any other nice hotels that have A/C and would offer more of a "local" experience than the Marriott?

If you want to stay downtown and if your wife agrees to give up the idea of a room with A/C, I would highly recommend Hotel Don Carlos (www.doncarloshotel.com). It is a very well run hotel, in an aged colonial mansion, with lots of costa rican flavor. Even if you do not stay here, make sure you take your wife to their gift shop (Boutique Annemarie -one of the best places to shop for gifts in San Jose; their prices are very decent and there is a lot of variety of things to buy here that are hard to find in just one place). We had a great stay here!

Now, if A/C is really important, and if you want to stay in a hotel that has a more local flavor then here are some other nice options:

1. Hotel Europa http://www.hoteleuropacr.com/

2. The Gran Hotel (the location can not be beat, just in front of the Teatro National; make sure you check out the Cafe Parisienne -it is a favorite hang out place for locals). If you stay here, ask for a room that does not face the plaza. We could not sleep the first night and we asked for a quiet room the next day :) We had a superior room and it was just fine for the 2 of us.

3. Hotel Presidente http://www.hotel-presidente.com/main.cfm

Let me know if you guys are also willing to cut your stay short in San Jose and if the idea of staying at a hotel in a coffee plantation sounds tempting. I can also give you information of a place close to San Jose where we stayed at and where we had great views of the coffee plantations and great service.

Have fun planning your trip!

Yes, it is. :)

The Marriott, although it *is* a Marriott, is actually very nice. It's also very convenient for the airport (which is what I assume you're looking for when you say "in the San Jose area".)

I do think, though, that you're right about not necessarily needing a/c, especially if you're a little higher up in the hills. For the same price as the Marriott (or maybe even less), you can stay at Xandari. I don't think they have a/c but, based on the reviews, if they don't have it, you won't need it.
