Looking for an update: Best area to stay in San Jose

Hi:

I will be passing through San Jose a day or two before starting classes outside of the city. What is the best place to stay for sight seeing, good food, and also a safe area. The last update on this type of question was posted in 2012.

If you have recently stayed in a San Jose hotel and loved it, let me know, too.

Thank you.

I will be heading up to a language school in Santa Ana. I want to stay in San Jose before heading up.

Thank you.

See twoweeksincostarica.com/1-2-days-san-jose-co…

It has some hotel suggestions and things to do for 1-2 days in SJ.

Santa Ana is located in the province of San Jose and is just 15 minutes from downtown. It is also nicer, cleaner, safer, more modern and has much easier access to the Pacific coast beaches. Just stay there.

There are many nice hotels there but I have not stayed at any so I don't have a personal recommendation.

A more "downtown" area will be Escalante. A nice, safe area with tooons of chick, artisanal restaurants, coffee shops and breweries.

Stay at Almeda Cariari in Ciudad Cariari. A beautiful setting in a walkable suburb about 10 km from the center and with easy access to the Panamerican Highway. Also great for those heading out for vacation.

I would take a look at Alajuela. A smaller city than San Jose, a few minutes from SJO. Plenty of great lodging options. You can walk around, enjoy the central mercado, go to zoo ave (an animal rescue park), take a day tour to Poas and much more. I prefer it to the noisy and crowded San Jose City. Also much safer for a solo traveler. Then very easy to get to SantaAna.

Another option is to stay in Rohrmoser in the Pavas district of San Jose. We've stayed there a number of times. It's where La Sabana Park is and is a very safe area. In fact, we're getting ready to go again and booked a place through Air b n b.

In addition to hotels referenced in post #3 (Gran Hotel and Aranjuez) I can also recommend smaller B&Bs including Casa 69 and La Giocanda within waling distance of downtown. After dark is always wiser to use a taxi, especially for solo travelers.
