tent hire?

Is there a place in PJ to hire tents? And if you know, are they lightweight ones with good insect screens or big old canvas things that would let a horsefly in?

Am going to have to camp at Sirena and will need a tent, but don't want to waste fuel bringing my own from the UK if possible,

You can purchase an inexpensive tent at petty much any Cemaco store in the San Jose area. Price will be less than US$100 and quality won't be the greatest - it won't be a canvas tent, either.

I found myself in a HiperMas store today and saw Coleman tents for about USD 70 and up.

My Moon book says you can rent tents and stoves in Puerto Jimenez from Escondido Trex or Osa Army & Navy.

Having said that, though, I've done quite a few fly-and-camp trips and have always taken my own equipment. My 2-person tent is less than 5 pounds and our family's 4-person tent is 9 pounds. All in all, taking the tent adds less than 3 pounds per person. We buy stove fuel at our destination and, if we're car-camping, we'll also buy a cooler and camp chairs.

For me, the added luggage is definitely worth the peace-of-mind of knowing the equipment I'm going to be lugging/using, especially backcountry.
