Hiking Los Patos - Sirena OR boat trip Drake Bay-Sirena??

Hi!

I'll be visiting Corcovado Natural Park at the end of January.

We consider two ways of getting there. Hiking from Los Patos or boat from Drake Bay.

We are a healthy couple, not afraid of the 8 h hiking from Los Patos to Sirena. We mostly do the hike to spot animals.

However, is the boat trip from Sierpes - Drake Bay-Sirena really worth it? It is better (beautiful to see) that the hike?

On the way out we'll hike Sirena to Leona and Carate.

Another question. Do you recommend 1 or 2 nights in La Sirena? Can you see more wildlife in hikings around Sirena than in the long trails?

Thanks!!

No if you are up for hiking (with a guide) from Los Patos to Sirena in a tropical humid environment, that would be a much better option for spotting wildlife. Most of the boats plying the Sierpe River are traveling at a high rate of speed and wildlife viewing, other than birds, is minimal in my experience.

Also definitely 2 nights in Sirena at a minimum. Otherwise you'll arrive Sirena in the afternoon and have to hike out 1st thing in the morning without the option of exploring all the wildlife that is abundant around the ranger station. Also some of those hikes out to LaLeona start at dawn or earlier in order to hit low tide crossing the rivers. Also keep in mind this is rainforest and the odds of getting rain are fairly high no matter when you travel. Wildlife does a really good job of hiding when the rains come. If you add an extra day or 2 the odds increase that you will have some good weather for spotting wildlife.

Also, if you will enter La Sirena from Drake Bay side, and exit via Carate side, you will need to haul all your luggage (backpacks) from La Sirena to Carate. Not an easy feat. So If hiking is your pleasure, do stay in Puerto Jimenez area, a day before and at least one day after your Corcovado experience. You will also need to hire a guide at least for Los Patos to La Sirena hike (the La Sirena to Carate is easier to do on your own). Do stay 2 nights otherwise with only one night, it will be all hiking. And while nobody can predict the wildlife behavior, I am under impression that during your hike you will not have much time, or will, to observe the wildlife. Thus one full day in La Sirena will make a big difference.

One other thought to consider about how long to stay in the park...

I recommend two nights because

1. Hiking in or out of the park is just that - hiking - sure you will stop to see nature and animals but your mission is to complete your hike before sunset or high tides, so you have some time pressure to keep moving.

2. The middle day of a three day expedition affords you the leisure to walk the trails in around Sirena, where you can spot lots of stuff, at a leisurely pace without the pressure of trying to make your destination on time.

So, in my opinion, if you are hiking into Corcovado, do yourself a favor and spend a minimum of two nights in the park, so that on the middle day you can fully enjoy the park without the weight of your backpack, or the time pressure on onward walking. This may be a once in a lifetime experience - why not fully enjoy it.

Thank you so much all of you for your help. I will definitely do the hiking Los Patos - La Sirena and stay the two nights inside the park.

Current conditions (Jan 9, 2014) on the Los Patos trail are horrible and NOT RECOMMENDED. The trail is in very bad shape with deep mud making walking very tiring and difficult.

If you plan to hike the Los Patos trail anytime in the next 15-30 days, please consider entering through La Leona trail instead.

If your set on hiking Los Patos, do yourself a favor and consult with the park office in Puerto Jimenez or a local who knows the current conditions on the trial first.
