Best way to travel from La Fortuna to Puerto Jimenez

Hi, We are two persons who plan to travel from La Fortuna to Puerto Jimenez during one day (to a reasonable price of $100-120) or is that too optimistic?

Are there any cheap shuttle companies you would recommend? We were hoping to catch a bus from La Fortuna-San Jose and then maybe a shuttle from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez if not too expensive. We have also considered taking a bus SJO-PJ but believes it takes up to 10h and there is no AC..Anyone who has taken the bus and would recommend it?

Many thanks,

Annelie

You'll save an entire days worth of travel if you hop on a flight from La Fortuna to Puerto Jimenez or Golfito on Nature Air or Sansa. Just check their flights as they don't always have flights daily depending on the time of year. :-) Here are their websites:

Enjoy!

There is not way to even get between these two areas in one day. Thats a 14 hour slog, and driving in CR is not easy nor stress free. If you do fly, the flight will go via San Jose. Make sure you have reservations/permits for the park, prior to going in high season, dont show up assuming you can overnight/meals at the Sirena ranger station, the hiking the loop. Also, a guide is strongly recommended.

If you are not hiking the Loop, from PJ, then consider going to Drake Bay, you get Shuttle Osa from Jaco/Quepos to Sierrpe, then you get a boat down river, and down pacific coast to DB from there, and access Corcovado via boats, not trails.

The drive from La Fortuna to Puerto Jimenez...no more than 10 hours...and of course if you like to drive around is 100% doable..

Driving in Costa Rica now days is nice and simple...in your case you will be mostly at road 34 nice road...smooth ride...and getting into Puerto Jimenez...nice road as well..

But flying is a nice way ...not cheap...but nice...

This is all 2 lanes. Driving 10 hours, in Costa Rica, is not for the faint of heart. Not to mention its a good chance of rain in many areas as the day wears on. Its also a lot of fatigue driving in CR, and rule #1 in CR, is do NOT drive at night to destinations, just to dinner or a cafe. It gets dark at 530pm.

From Arenal to Quepos is 4 hours, and its 5 hours from there without a stop, so be my guest on that trip....ughhh. Stay in Dominical area, or Ochojal, great dining there...

Thank you both.

Since it is a long way we will not drive ourselves. If we are not flying the idea is to take a private shuttle/local bus (depending on the bus schedule) from La fortuna to San Jose and then bus from San Jose down to Puerto Jimenez. But maybe it is better to go along the coast as mentioned and not via San Jose, did not think of that..

I just read in one thread here that one option could be to go with Ticabus (with both toilet and AC on the bus) that goes from San Jose to Panama and jump off at Golfito (then taxiboat to JP). It seemed like a better option than to take the local bus without toilet/AC (Transporto Blanco) from San Jose.

Ok, so we will need to request permission to the park also for one-day trips, is that right? We have booked a room at a lodge just outside PJ where we will stay for 5 days and then make daily tours around the peninsula (not yet booked).

Do you know if Shuttle Osa is reliable? I read something less favorable in one of the threads here so it would be great to know. The price was cheap though compared to other shuttles :) Many thanks
